A Sensory Evening of Art + Food + Wine at La Motte

A compelling exploration of South African landscapes and horizons.

La Motte Van Horison Tot Horison
La Motte Van Horison Tot Horison

Beguiled by glorious mountain and vineyard vistas on all sides, the dilemma on arriving at La Motte in Franschhoek is where to begin… Since the meticulous renovation and redesign of the main courtyard complex, there’s a cornucopia of riches to explore. An airy glass-walled foyer draws the eye through to the soaring spaces of the art-lined Ateljee, an enticing path winds through to the oak-shaded lawn in front of L’Ami Family Brasserie. There are delightful shops to browse and, above a landscaped pond, the wine centre beckons. This re-imagined werf is now also the setting for special evenings and events that bridge art, wine and dining to delight all the senses.

Expanding horizons

La Motte Ateljee

South African landscapes inspire the latest exhibition in the La Motte Ateljee, entitled Van Horison tot Horison. Fourteen contemporary artists (working across painting, printmaking, sculpture, sound, installation and artist books) enter into dialogue with the landscape and respond to the visual language of renowned predecessors such as JH Pierneef, Maggie Laubsert and Irma Stern. On one special evening the farm takes the experience to the next level, following a guided walkabout of the exhibition with a horizontal tasting entitled In the Art of Chardonnay. Cellarmaster Edmund Terblanche continues the horizon and landscape theme by presenting wines from Franschhoek estates that you can see on the horizon from a La Motte mountainside viewpoint.

Food for thought

La Motte Dinner

The evening culminates in a five-course dinner at L’Ami Family Brasserie, where chef Stephan Moolman explores the landscape through food and wine. The five-course menu starts with bread from the La Motte Bakery’s famed wood-fired oven, followed by an exceptional series of dishes that make the most of the restaurant’s Spanish Vulcano Gres Grill, accompanied by La Motte wines with a special selection from the estate’s Reserve Collection and Rupert Vinoteque on the estate.

La Motte Wine

A not-to-be-missed opportunity to explore another dimension of art, food and wine in glorious surroundings.
