Open-Air Night Garden at Montebello Design Centre in Newlands
This creative hub in leafy Newlands opens its doors for the first night garden of the summer.
By Inside Guide • October 13, 2019
One of the best-kept secrets of the southern suburbs is Montebello Design Centre: a creative hub in Newlands that’s home to 25 studios where local artists’, designers’ and crafters’ showcase and sell their wares. It’s also where you’ll find The Gardener’s Cottage, a popular restaurant whose heavenly breakfasts, light lunches and teas attract patrons from far and wide.
Each year in summer, Montebello hosts two night gardens to celebrate its talented craftspeople, and offer members of the public an opportunity to soak up the centre’s rich history in a fun and festive environment.

Visitors are free to browse displays of handcrafted ceramics, textiles, jewellery, paintings, woodwork and homeware, while being serenaded by local musicians. And, as always, there’ll be delicious food and drinks on sale.
If you’re looking for a tranquil spot to rest your feet, pre-book a table under the camphor trees at The Gardener’s Cottage, which is open from 6pm until 8.30pm. (Pre-booking is required as tables fill up fast.)
