There’s nothing like getting together in the kitchen for conversation and laughter to flow. If you’re looking to add some Mother’s Day spoils to the equation, then a whole weekend getaway in beautiful surroundings near Robertson, planned around a series of baking workshops, would be the stuff of lifelong memories. And you get to level up your baking skills too. The charming Cape Dutch farmhouse at Penhill Farm in the Nuy Valley (between Worcester and Robertson) is the setting for this idyllic two-night escape. Penhill chef Frikkie Janse van Rensburg shares his expertise throughout the weekend, in between cooking up a series of sumptuous long-table farm feasts for all the guests to gather around.
Baking extravaganza
You’ll learn how to make an enriched dough for cinnamon rolls or doughnuts (which will be baked for the next morning’s breakfast); lady finger biscuits (which you’ll turn into a tiramisu for dinner); Turkish Delight with a variety of flavours and techniques; a quick and easy breakfast bread; English muffins; and baklava. And the programme leaves plenty of down-time to enjoy the beautiful setting in-between workshops.
Living the country dream
As the scents of baking waft from the kitchen, take time out to wander the lovingly tended gardens, hike a nature trail to enjoy the views, swim in a pool or canoe on a farm dam, play tennis, croquet or boules, or find a shady tree to sit under with a book and a glass of wine from Penhill’s boutique winery.
Country chic
The whitewashed Cape Dutch manor house (dating back to 1840) and four farm cottages have been restored to old-world country elegance for a taste of authentic Klein Karoo farm living with a deluxe touch: with ensuite bathrooms, air-conditioning, comfortable sitting rooms and fireplaces for cosy evenings after the sun sets. The cottages even have wood-fired hot tubs.
