Penhill Farm: Dinner in the Vines + an Overnight Stay
A magical long-table dinner in the vines and a sleepover.
Heritage is woven into the walls, gables and thatched roof at Penhill Farm, which has stood through centuries of South African history. Set in the Nuy Valley, less than a two-hour drive from Cape Town on the road to Robertson, the restored manor house (and four farm cottages) offer a timeless, old-world kind of country comfort. Framed by gardens laid out generations ago and a 700-hectare private expanse of wild fynbos-clad hills, it’s a place to relax deeply and breathe as you swim and canoe in the farm dams, follow mountain trails, and play tennis, boules or croquet. And, this summer, they’re laying on a magical Friday-night long-table dinner among the vines.
A summer night to remember

A long table laid between rows of vines, fairy light strung above and candles flickering on wood and linen – this is summer in the Nuy Valley at its most romantic. The sun drops behind the hills as you sip your welcome drink… then mountains fade into dusk, crickets take over from birdsong and you linger over course after course of seasonal farm fare, with wafts of live music playing in the background and conversation taking centre stage.
Designed as a supremely relaxed Friday-night getaway for no more than 24 guests, Dinner in the Vines is an effortless and unforgettable way to mark an occasion for couples, friends and small groups.

Naturally, you’ll be staying the night and wandering back to your cottage or the manor house under clear skies filled with stars to a chorus of cicadas…
A country home from home

Beautifully restored, the characterful accommodation provides authentic farm living with the deluxe touch throughout. The 1840 Cape Dutch manor (sleeps 8), two historic two-bedroom cottages (the Fruit Barn and secluded Pepper Tree Cottage – the oldest structure in the valley, built in 1750) and the recently added East and West Grange (double-storey, semi-detached two-bedroom cottages) have luxurious furnishings and all the home comforts (including airconditioning, heating, wifi and big-screen streaming facilities). Hot tubs in the cottages, and swimming pools at the Manor House and the Fruit Barn invite contemplative time soaking up the views.
Morning glory

Wake up to a delicious farm breakfast the following morning with time to soak up the glorious surroundings. Explore the lovingly tended gardens, enjoy a refreshing morning dip, canoe or paddleboard on the farm dam, or engage in a friendly game of tennis, croquet or boules, before heading off on your next adventure. A beautiful summer interlude of vineyard enchantment for a memorable Friday-night getaway.
