A summer blast in a magical setting.
A summer evening, an almost-full moon and jazz music played live under a starry sky is a recipe for pure magic. And there’s hardly a more picturesque setting than the lawns at Steenberg in the Constantia Valley. The concert is set in the historic werf area among the heritage buildings of Tryn restaurant and the Steenberg Hotel, majestic oak trees backed by mountain vistas, as sunset turns to moonlight. Arrive early for a picnic on the lawns or book a delicious three-course dinner at tables set under the oak trees on the Tryn terrace.
An evening of jazz
Local jazz legend Shaun Johannes and his trio (pianist Andrew Ford and drummer/vocalist Carl ‘China’ Van Rensburg) will be filling the night with soul-tingling jazz melodies and music that will have your toes twitching to get up and dance. As a trio they have over a decade’s worth of performances across Southern Africa for artists such as Johnny Clegg, George Benson, Katherine Jenkins, Lira and Karen Zoid. And Shaun is a renowned composer and bassist who has travelled the world and jammed with global jazz legends.
You’re welcome to come just for the concert and a glass of wine, but it’s tempting to make a whole night of it, arrive early and soak up the serene surroundings over a meal. There’s a choice of a plated three-course dinner at tables under the trees, or book a picnic box to share more casually on the lawns.
Lounge on the lawn
The Alfresco picnic box for two is laden with seasonal goodies: to start, classic antipasti-style nibbles like cured meats and local cheeses, homemade ciabatta and cheese sticks, and crudites. In addition, the Tryn kitchen adds delectable finger foods such as bacon-and-boerenkaas quiche, butternut-and-truffle-honey hummus, pickled-fish terrine, beef tataki, a seasonal salad and some delicious desserts.
Good to know If you choose the picnic option, bring your own blankets, cushions and throws. You are welcome to bring outdoor chairs, to be seated on the perimeter of the lawn.
A sit-down dinner on the terrace
For the three-course plated dinner, choose your starter, main and dessert from Tryn’s modern à la carte menu. It also includes an amuse-bouche and chocolate truffle to finish. Vegetarian and vegan options are available. Among all the tempting dishes, ordering can be quite a dilemma: there are masala-dusted calamari, pear and chevin tart, confit duck, truffle mushroom ravioli, glazed pork belly with tamarind, Dijon mustard-crusted lamb rack, umami-glazed fish and many more delicious dishes.
To accompany your dinner or picnic, Steenberg’s range of award-winning wines will be available to purchase, as well as other beverages.
A jazz-soaked evening by moonlight for a late-summer alfresco flourish.
