Steenberg: Sunset Picnic (or Dinner) with Live Jazz at Tryn

A romantic sunset with mountains glowing pink and the strains of live music wafting over the lawns… there’s no better way to keep the summer vibes flowing! Steenberg’s late-summer concert takes place on the lawns in the historic werf in front of Tryn, with old oak trees and gabled buildings adding to the scenic Constantia Valley setting. As the light fades to twilight and sunset gives way to moonrise, you can feast on a curated picnic from chef Kerry Kilpin and team, or tuck into a three-course dinner at one of Tryn’s terrace tables under the oaks, while some of Cape Town’s hippest musicians take you on jazz journey through the decades.

Jazz with a kick

The journey starts in the Roaring 20s Prohibition Era and takes you through the Swingin’ 30s and 40s, ending with the classic Motown sounds of the 1960s. Led by saxophonist Dan Shout,  the dynamic Moonshine jazz band includes Amy Campbell (vocals), Andrew Ford (piano), Sibusiso Matsimela (double bass) and Langa Dubazana (drum kit). Expect a mesmerising evening as they move through high-energy swing, jazz and Motown, with music from Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole, right through to the rocking sounds of Fats Domino, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Amy Winehouse.

Picnic on the lawns

A delicious box of goodies awaits you as you throw down your picnic blankets on the lawns. Nibble on fresh ciabatta and antipasti, charcuterie and cheese, mini quiches, pickled fish terrine, beef tataki and many more delicious bites from the Tryn kitchens (including their legendary chocolate truffles). It’s a feast of summer flavour served in relaxed but chic style. Drink a toast to late summer evenings of sunset and moonlight with a glass of wine (or a G&T, beer or soft drink from the bar).
Good to know If you choose the picnic option, bring your own blankets, cushions and throws. You are welcome to bring outdoor chairs, to be seated on the perimeter of the lawn.

Dinner under the oaks

A three-course plated dinner at a comfortable table on the terrace gives an elegant vantage point for the evening’s festivities. Choose your starter, main and dessert from Tryn’s modern à la carte menu, which also includes an amuse-bouche and chocolate truffle to finish. Dine in style on dishes that might include porcini ravioli or kataifi prawns, pork belly and umami-glazed fish. Vegetarian and vegan options are available.

To accompany your dinner or picnic, Steenberg’s range of award-winning wines will be available to purchase, as well as other beverages.
