Merchant Bar & Grill Special: R595 for 4 Courses

Feted chef Liam Tomlin’s heritage building on Bree Street is home to two equally fabulous restaurants. Outside, the familiar charcoal-and-red signage of the original Chefs Warehouse & Canteen reflects a welcome return to the roots of his concept, and upstairs, Merchant Bar & Grill, (chef David Schneider’s passion project), focusses on purely local ingredients, and delicious dishes that use the whole animal, the whole vegetable…plus old-school pickling and preserving techniques that just make sense.
For winter the two establishments are mixing it up for a special menu that highlights a selection of both their hero dishes. Kick off with David’s home-cured charcuterie served with piccalilli, sourdough and bagels. Then, shared plates from Chefs Warehouse that include pork dumplings, and tiradito. Merchant’s mains feature their divine carbonara with guanciale; linefish with fennel and horseradish velouté; and a beef flat-iron steak with café de Paris butter and roast potatoes. And to finish, of course, it’s Liam’s iconic lemon tart and a local corn dessert.

Scala Winter Special: R345 for 3 Courses

There’s a beautiful marriage of traditional Italian charm and cutting-edge cool in the atmospheric below-street-level space that is Scala. Chef Luciano Monosilio from Rome (one of the youngest Italian chefs to gain a Michelin star – at age 27), shares his signature techniques and secret recipes with a resident team led by executive chef Justin Barker, and transforms the traditional Italian table into a feast of antipasto and pasta sharing plates.
Their winter set menu does just that, with rich, layered flavours that promise comfort and warmth. It begins with Italian olive and potato focaccia alongside roasted pumpkin cream. A trio of hearty pastas follows: pappardelle alla Teramana with fried meatballs; creamy mussel risotto with nduja and Provolone; and rigatoni all’Amatriciana featuring coal-roasted tomato and guanciale. Seebamboes Dinner Special: R850 for a Multi Courses

Surf and turf gets a dash of flair when the team behind Belly of the Beast and Galjoen start to play. Anouchka Horn and Neil Swart have collaborated with chef Adél Hughes and Jill-of-all-trades Liebet Jooste to develop a tasting-menu experience that riffs on gastronomic nostalgia in a contemporary reimagining of surf and turf. The result? Playful, celebratory, original, delicious! Seebamboes’ winter special dinner menu in the intimate mezzanine space above Galjoen (seating just 16 diners), is as always a surprise (the menu only revealed as each dish arrives at your table), but combines sea- and land-harvested produce in nuanced, experimental, and delicious ways (and with an offbeat local winelist).

Regularly hosting top local musicians, you can toe-tap to top-brass beats while enjoying a delectable array of dishes from Grub & Vine’s kitchen. Yatai Ramenbar Winter Special: R349 for 4 Courses

Stepping off Bree Street into the dark and moody interiors, a riot of seductive cherry blossoms in the windows, with sizzling-hot beats and a buzz emanating from the open kitchen, it’s clear that Yatai is already a must-visit hotspot. Here, chefs Rikku O’Donnchu and Warwick King shine the spotlight on ramen, streetfood and a sparkle of sashimi. It’s a vibe!
Their winter set menu perfectly offers deep, comfort-driven flavours. Begin the four-course feast with a welcome duo of a miso soup bomb and chawamushi, before tucking into a trio choice of small plates: wood-ear mushroom salad with black vinegar and chili; yaki onigiri topped with crispy chicken skin and pickled daikon; and tender pork cheek robatayaki with a carrot-ginger glaze. Next up is ramen (of course!) – a rich chicken katsu curry udon, layered with crispy shimeji, marinated egg, and menma. One Response to “The Best Winter Restaurant Specials in Cape Town”
ASTRID LIEBRECHT
These restaurants all look divine but unfortunately not affordable for most pensioners. As an older person, cannot eat more than 1 or 2 courses maximum.
