Blue Room Dinner Special: R495 for Three Courses + Canapés

The Blue Room: Grub And Vine

Downstairs from Grub & Vine, chef Matt Manning’s popular Bree Street bistro, this cocktail lounge and jazz club adds another dimension to a night out in the Mother City. Regularly hosting top local musicians, you can toe-tap to top-brass musos while enjoying a delectable array of dishes from the bistro kitchen. As for the cocktails, named after perennially cool jazz artists, they’re equally appetising. The dinner special showcases winter flavours in Matt’s refined bistro style, featuring seared trout with charred watermelon; butternut risotto with pickled butternut and confit lemon; and a choice of pan-fried linefish with charred calamari and baby fennel, or braised lamb neck with smoked aubergine for mains. Dessert is an optional extra should chocolate tart, passionfruit panna cotta, or a South African cheese board appeal.

Grub & Vine Menu du Jour Special: R355 for Two Courses

Grub And Vine Special

The good, honest (and refined) fare of Matt Manning’s two renowned bistros (on Bree Street and at The Norval Foundation in the Constantia Winelands) gets an extra dollop of hearty flavour in autumn, with grub – and wine – both out of the top drawer. Warm up with the menu du jour, which kicks off with canapés, followed by your choice of two or three courses (starter, middle and main) and three options to choose from at each course. The good news is there’s a different menu at each of the two branches, so you can get all the dining pleasure twice over.
Grub & Vine Bree Think beetroot and goats’ cheese agnolotti, butternut risotto, pan-fried linefish with charred calamari, confit pork belly, beef sirloin with braised oxtail, and more.
Grub & Vine Norval Tuck into seared yellowtail, wild mushroom tart, potato gnocchi, braised lamb neck, pan-roasted line fish with squid, and beef short rib, among other delicious dishes.
You can also add dessert afterwards if you have room and can’t resist chocolate tart or sticky toffee pudding.

Grub & Vine Norval: Sunday Lunch Special

Grub And Vine Norval

The airy glass-walled restaurant at Norval Foundation overlooks striking sculpture gardens, rolling mountains and a beautiful outdoor deck. Grub & Vine Norval is a sophisticated new sibling to Matt Manning’s Grub & Vine on Bree Street, known for refined bistro fare partnered with a superb wine offering. On winter Sundays there’s a delicious 3-course (plus canapés) Sunday lunch special to indulge in, with three options per course. After canapés of brandade with tartare sauce, and smoked hamhock on toasted brioche with onion jam, tuck into a choice of flavour-packed starters. There’s wild mushroom tart with asparagus; chicken liver parfait and toasted brioche; and roasted cauliflower soup with truffle oil to choose between. Another dilemma for mains: braised beef shortrib; chicken ballotine with mushroom duxelle; or pan-roast pork neck with charred leek, bacon and mustard jus. And finish off with sticky toffee pudding; vanilla sponge with lemon posset and banana custard; or a South African cheese board.

Grub & Vine Winter Tasting Menu: R695 For 5 Courses

Grub And Vine: Tasting Menu

“No-nonsense, good tasty food, beautiful produce and honest cooking” is how chef Matt Manning describes his Grub & Vine bistro offerings (on Bree Street and at The Norval Foundation in the Constantia Winelands). The beautifully prepared and executed seasonal dishes shine with full-on flavour in autumn and winter, the ideal time to sit down and relax over a six-course tasting menu…perhaps with one of three wine-pairing options (Matt’s local and international wine collection is second to none).
At Grub & Vine Bree, kick off with canapés: spiced pumpkin arancini; chicken and mushroom in phyllo; and West Coast oyster with pineapple salsa. An amuse bouche of seared trout with charred watermelon is followed by a shallot tarte tatin with baby turnips and shimeji mushrooms. A choice of butternut risotto or pan-fried linefish with charred calamari is the middle course, then for mains choose between confit pork belly with baked radish and caramelised apple; or braised lamb neck with smoked aubergine and potato fondant. Dessert is either a passionfruit panna cotta with strawberry sorbet; or a chocolate tart with shortbread and salted caramel ice cream. Bon appetit!
The special R695 for 6 courses (Bree); R695 for 5 courses (Norval)
Good to know Grub & Vine Norval’s tasting menu is 5 courses (skipping the amuse bouche) with highlights such as wild mushroom tortellini with braised fennel and pickled shimeji; and braised lamb neck with smoked aubergine caviar. There’s also a plant-based alternative tasting menu.

The Glenelly special sounds really great , but sad that they discriminate against the over 30’s. Do they have a similar offer for the over 60’s many on limited incomes ,similar to the under 30’s .
