96 Winery Road Restaurant: A Somerset West Stalwart

96 Winery Road

Hearty dishes in a welcoming atmosphere.

Aptly named for the year it opened, 96 Winery Road has been a Somerset West staple for more than two decades – quite a feat in an ever-changing restaurant scene where new eateries open and close faster than you can say “panko-crumbed Brie” (but more about that particular dish later).

An institution

Owned and run by the same crew who opened it 24 years ago (namely Ken Forrester, Allan Forrester, Martin Meinert and Natasha Wray), 96 Winery Road is known, and returned to, for its hospitality, which is one of its cornerstones. If you’re looking for modern decor or sleek architectural designs, you won’t find it here; patrons return for the warmth, relaxed, family-friendly surrounds and consistently good food.

The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating – on a shaded patio or on the grass. Across from the outdoor seating area is a jungle gym where kids can play while adults enjoy their meal.

The food

Head chef Adrian Buchanan, who has been with the restaurant for five years, recently introduced a plates menu from which guests can pick two, three or four plates for lunch or dinner. The plates are classically inspired, featuring smaller versions of mains dishes, such as lamb loin, pepper fillet, confit duck and spinach and ricotta tortellini. We especially enjoyed the panko-crumbed Brie, served with wild rocket and spicy bacon jam, and the crème brûlée for dessert. With Ken Forrester one of the owners, it’s not surprising that the wine menu is extensive!

Please note There’s also a range of wonderful alcohol-free drinks on the menu.

96 Winery Road is open daily for breakfast, and offers a concise menu of muesli, omelettes with your choice of fillings, croissants, sandwiches and a savoury waffle. The on-site deli stocks a selection of local produce, wagyu meats, jams, preserves and sauces.

And, if you’re a mountain biker, bring your wheels! There’s a Wannabees trail on the farm that starts and finishes at the restaurant. Day passes cost R60 and are available from the restaurant.

Good to know While 96 Winery Road remains open for sit-down dining, it is also offering a drive-through option, so you may enjoy their wholesome favourites at home. Order via WhatsApp (078 924 1713) and then drive through the parking area where one of the friendly staff members will place your meal in your boot.
