Upbeat music, tasty nibbles and cool cocktails at this central hotspot.
Set under the eaves of a revamped Victorian-era house, Asoka is an ambient bar and restaurant built around a 150-year-old, fairy-lit olive tree on Kloof Street. And, despite so many restaurants vying for attention on this popular strip, Asoka stands out, as it has for over a decade, as a vibrant venue – with decadent food and drinks to match!
Fusions of flavour
The eclectic décor provides the perfect backdrop for an evening of decadent food and drinks. Think chilli and garlic prawns; butter chicken curry; duck spring rolls; Asian beef tartare; wild mushroom and gorgonzola arancini; and truffled teriyaki beef fillet. Dessert lovers will be deeply satisfied with the choices of malva pudding; salted caramel cheesecake; and chocolate fondant desserts.
Special menu
Asoka is currently running an unmissable three-course dinner special (R195) where diners are invited to choose one item from a choice of three. The starters selection, for example, features Asian beef tartare, West Coast mussels and a mezze platter, while the main course is a choice between tuna tacos, grilled ostrich fillet and teriyaki wild-mushroom dumplings with sesame bok choy. The third course features the following options: vegetarian butter curry, grass-fed beef slider or hake tempura.

Hot beats
Evenings at Asoka are elevated by live music from some of the city’s top musicians: Tuesday nights see Mr Keys and the Funky Munks playing a two-hour jazz set from 5pm followed by progressive house by JanuaryOne. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the scene is turned up a notch, when local DJs Peter Larkin, Brenton Stoffberg, Eskay, JanuaryOne, and Cassiem Latief hit the decks.
