Beaumont Wines: A Farm Kitchen + Deli with Warmth + Flavour

Beaumont Wines Deli

There’s more to this family farm in Bot River than stupendous wine…

It’s easy to feel like part of the family within minutes of arriving at Beaumont. The down-to-earth Overberg wine farm, with views from the shaded restaurant terrace over the undulating hills and valleys, is home to three generations of the Beaumont family, who have created an inimitable away-from-it-all ambience that invites you to relax and unwind.

All the generations are hands-on involved, as the galleries of photos of the entire clan attest: winemaking, farming, surfing and cooking up a storm in the warm and welcoming farm kitchen.

A family farm

Beaumont Wines Garden

Established in the 1700s as a supply farm for the Dutch East India Company, the farm was called Compagnes Drift when Raoul and Jayne Beaumont bought it in 1974. You can still see its history in the oldest wine cellar in the region, and in the restored and functioning ancient water mill. Jayne pioneered their winemaking with a heady pinotage (in 1994) and hand-drawn labels, as they transformed the property together, pursued bee-keeping and cultivated the vineyards. She still makes wine today along with maintaining the beautiful gardens, but now her eldest son Sebastian and his wife Nici have taken over the running of the farm, with a fresh vision and the input of the extended family.

Finely crafted wines

Raised in the very vineyards he’s harvesting today, Sebastian knows his terroir like the back of his hand and intuitively understands the cultivars that flourish here. Chenin blanc and pinotage are the standouts, with mourvèdre a personal passion project, resulting in fascinating wines that are as full of character as the family members they’re named after. The tasting experience is personal and unintimidating. Guests are the best wine critics, Sebastian says: “If you like it you like it, and if you don’t you don’t, no pressure.”

Good to know The wines scooped four 5-star awards at Platters 2024, with the Beaumont Hope Marguerite scoring 95 points in the Tim Atkin report too.

Gourmet farm food

Beaumont Wines Deli Gourmet Food

“It doesn’t have to be fancy, but it has to be memorable,” is what Nici Beaumont and Jen Pearson say of the gourmet farm food they serve at Zest Deli & Kitchen. They started their company, Zest Catering, 20 years ago, and this is a fresh expression of their passion for simple food done well. They grow as much as they can on the farm and ethically source the rest.

Beaumont Wines Deli Food

Delicious dishes, such as tarte flambée, duck spring rolls, ricotta and spinach gnudi, and chicken schnitzel burgers, are served in the whitewashed, prettily tiled deli, or outdoors under the oaks on the terrace, next door to the tasting room. Followed by not-to-be-missed desserts: the burnt Basque cheesecake with sour cherry compote strikes a memorable chord.

Oh, and take your mountain bikes for a ride, or stroll the farm trails after lunch.

Take-home farm goodness

Beaumont Wines Deli Shelves

As a bonus, the deli shelves are packed with good farm food: cheeses and charcuterie, home-baked rusks and preserves, and there’s a floor-to-ceiling freezer filled with Zest frozen meals: lamb-and-fig tagine, beef lasagne, coq au vin, butter chicken, lentil moussaka and many more… We stuffed a cooler bag with a stash when it was time to leave – dinner sorted for the whole week.

Beaumont Wines Deli Lunch

Good to know The 250-year-old mill is still in working order and you can join the family and Andy Selfe for milling days and buy the organic flour every couple of months.
