Downstairs from Grub & Vine, chef Matt Manning’s popular Bree Street bistro, a new cocktail lounge and jazz club is adding another dimension to going out in the Mother City. In collaboration with prominent jazz muso Buddy Wells, The Blue Room is a magnet for lovers of live music, who can expect sets by some of the country’s top jazz, soul and blues artists.

It’s an atmospheric space, reminiscent of a secret speakeasy, with raw brick and blue walls, curvy wooden ceiling, candlelight, mirrors and leather seating.

The Saturday Brunch Club

What better way to ease into the weekend than with a leisurely brunch, bottomless bubbly and a toe-tapping soundtrack? The Brunch Club at The Blue Room offers the full experience, with a delectable menu courtesy of Grub & Vine’s kitchen, bottomless bubbly from Graham Beck – or a Bloody Mary or mimosa, should you prefer…

The sharing-plates menu includes delights such as West Coast oysters with a pineapple and chilli dressing, tempura prawn po’boy, ricotta gnocchi, pulled lamb with rösti or Toulouse sausages with BBQ beans. To finish? Cinnamon churros with chocolate sauce, lemon tart with passion fruit sorbet or a cheese board.

Manning The Blue Room Jazz Evenings

The jazz action continues in the evenings, from Wednesday to Saturday, when patrons can settle in with a cocktail and some small plates, and disappear into the magical atmosphere behind the blue curtains to enjoy the show. Make a night of it and book the “Dinner & a Show” package – arrive a little earlier and enjoy welcome canapés, a signature cocktail, two-course set menu and the performance for R495.

Thursday nights take the form of a freewheeling Jazz Jam session, while the other nights are reserved for performances by headline artists.

The building retains what was once the Red Bull Music Studios recording space, which is available for artists to book. Blue Room patrons will be able to catch these recordings in action from time to time, through a viewing window that faces the main seating area.

The Blue Room is currently running a half-price cocktail special. Cocktails range from the classics (Martini, Mojito, Old Fashioned, Moscow Mule) to a selection of exquisite signature creations by chef Matt – such as the Ella Fizzgerald (gin, lime, rhubarb, fennel and brut MCC) and the Muddy Waters (bourbon, dry sherry, vanilla maple and naartjie). There is also a selection of spirits, wines and beers.

Good to know

  • There are two seatings for evening performances: 8pm and 9.30pm.
  • There is a cover charge of R150 per person (R200 for both seatings and R120 for Jazz Jam), which goes towards the artists.
  • Cocktails and tapas are served from 4pm daily, except Sunday.
