From the makers of Grub & Vine, this jazz club hits all the right notes.

Downstairs from Grub & Vine, chef Matt Manning’s popular Bree Street bistro, a new cocktail lounge and jazz club is adding another dimension to a night out in the Mother City. In collaboration with prominent jazz musician Buddy Wells, it will regularly host top local musicians.

“As with dining out, music is one of those things that adds magic to life,” says Matt. “Marrying my experience in hospitality with my passion for jazz, I wanted to provide an exciting platform for local talent and help resuscitate the music scene, another casualty of the pandemic.”

Live sets by some of the country’s top jazz, soul and blues artists will be a regular evening occurrence at the Blue Room, with the festive season 2021 line-up including the likes of Nobuhle Ashanti, Darren English, Tefo Mohala and Hilton Schilder’s Goema Club, to name a few.

“We’ve set out to create a space in which our finest artists can focus on making beautiful music,” says Buddy, “a space where the music takes the listener on a wonderful journey.”

The building retains what was once the Red Bull Music Studios recording space, which is available for artists to book. Blue Room patrons will be able to catch these recordings in action from time to time, through a viewing window that faces the main seating area.

The Blue Room will serve delectable small plates from Grub & Vine’s kitchen, as well as a selection of exquisite cocktails that Matt created and named after perennially cool jazz artists. The Ella Fizzgerald, for example, comprises gin, lime, rhubarb, fennel and brut MCC, while the Muddy Waters packs a punch, with bourbon, dry sherry, vanilla maple and naartjie.

Good to know

  • The Blue Room is open for lunch on weekdays, brunch on Saturdays, and tapas and cocktails at night.
  • There are two seatings for evening performances: 7pm and 9pm.
  • There is a cover charge of R100 per person, which goes towards the artists.
