Ellerman House Restaurants: Dining with Distinction at Curate + OneEighty

Ellerman House

When Ellerman House invites guests into its otherworldly embrace, you can be sure of a culinary journey of note. The Relais & Chateaux property in Bantry Bay is a magnet for world-class accolades for its next-level boutique accommodation and hospitality, and executive chef Kieran Whyte’s superb seasonal fare is all part of the allure. Over the past five years he’s worked closely with chef Peter Tempelhoff to refine menus that explore South African flavours with artistry and expertise at the (recently renamed) OneEighty restaurant. And Curate, an immersive fine-dining experience which has taken over the extraordinary wine gallery, is the natural extension of their holistic culinary philosophy.

OneEighty: Feels like home

Ellerman House: OneEighty

The exquisitely elegant dining room in the heart of the intimate hotel is lined with art from its fabulous collection, but it’s the views that draw the eye in daytime… 180-degree grandstand views of the Atlantic Ocean through long windows and from the alfresco dining terrace. Here executive chef Kieran offers a daily-changing menu driven by sustainability, seasonality and the flavours of the Cape. Simple, but thoughtfully refined, these are comforting dishes that feel like home… only so much better. Choose two or three beautifully plated courses accompanied by pitch-perfect wine pairings and superb service.

Curate: Multi-course tasting menu

Bold flavours meet elegant craftsmanship on Curate’s inaugural menu, for an immersive fine-dining experience that touches all the senses. Each dish celebrates the land, heritage and seasons of South Africa, as you journey from exquisitely presented bites, such as a salmon trout koeksister; amagwinya and caviar with smoked snoek; a Cape mushroom melktert with last season’s winter truffles; to Queenstown springbok with samp, beans and makataan; or Kuruman Nguni beef with marrow and monkey gland sauce. There’s so much more to look forward to on the multi-course tasting menu, not least the expertly curated wine pairings from the wine stewards, who also have access to rare vintages of iconic South African wines.

The Wine Gallery

A dramatically sculptural spiral of wine bottles is the focal point of the wine-gallery space occupied by Curate. Designed by renowned South African sculptor Angus Taylor, the Wine Gallery celebrates South Africa’s rich winemaking heritage (and holds the hotel’s 10 000-bottle collection). Co-owner Nell Harris, together with Natalie Haarhof of Just Design and Christoph Karl of Guideline Design, has blended in natural textures and refined aesthetics to connect the wine journey and dining experience. Exploring the cellar is all part of the Curate dining experience, a foray into a world of exceptional vintages that will intrigue any wine aficionado.

Two very different but equally intriguing ways to explore the flavours of the Cape through a meticulously crafted lens.
