The Gin Bar: A Hidden Gem in the CBD for Extraordinary G&Ts

The Gin Bar: A Hidden Gem in the CBD for Extraordinary G&Ts

This undercover gem in the Cape Town’s city centre is where connoisseurs congregate go, come sundown.

Tucked neatly behind Honest Chocolate Café in the armpit of the Commune 1 Gallery, this dedicated gin bar, like its chocolately sibling, is all about quality rather than quantity. The menu comprises of only five cocktails, aimed at providing connoisseurs with some much needed organic healing. Cleverly named Hope, Head, Heart, Ambition and Soul, the gins are refreshing, tasty and deliciously subtle in flavour.

The Gin Bar Cape Town

The pocket-sized Victorian-style bar shares a charming courtyard with Honest Chocolate, where guests can sit and savour their spirit of choice. My favourite is the herby Heart, which combines hints of rosemary with the fynbos flavours of Inverroche gin.

If you’re a purist, G&Ts are available; the difference is that here you get to choose which gin and which tonic water you prefer (the owners believe that the accompanying tonic is just as essential to the mix as the spirit is).

So, this Thursday evening, you know where to find me – in the Commune 1 courtyard, nursing a Heart or two…

Insider info The Gin Bar is a collaboration between long-time raw-chocolate mavens, Anthony Gird and his partner Michael de Klerk (of Honest Chocolate Café), and Dennis Williams and Jeanne Marais. Their other project is The Botanical Bar on Longmarket Street.
