Situated on the ocean’s edge, in view of Kalk Bay’s famous harbour, this acclaimed restaurant may as well be on the edge of the known world. It certainly feels that way, as you gaze out over the ocean, the waves crashing up against the windows and seals frolicking among the colourful fishing boats, while you dine on smack-of-the-sea dishes.
A Kalk Bay Catch
And where better to dine on bountiful seafood than in a fishing village? Voted the coolest neighbourhood in the world, Kalk Bay is exactly that. Its bohemian atmosphere and streets lined with galleries, cafés and boutiques, are all a part of Harbour House’s appeal.
The restaurant’s white-washed interiors, wooden floors and balconies overlooking the sea enhance the nautical ambience, with floor-to-ceiling glass panels maximising harbour, ocean and lighthouse views throughout.
Seafood is, naturally, the primary focus, and here you’re guaranteed some of the best in the city. Sushi, grilled crayfish, scallops, tuna tartare and oysters, as well as the popular seafood platter, great for sharing, and if you feel like a little taste of everything – from langoustines, prawns, chardonnay mussels, linefish, calamari tubes, and more. Be sure to enquire about the daily specials – you never know what the trawlers may have hauled in that morning!
For starters, we had the spicy Mozambican prawns, served with charred ciabatta. Superb. We recommend the seafood platter for mains, and the chocolate tart with raspberry sorbet and hazelnut praline dust for dessert.
But it’s not just about seafood; there’s a fine selection of salads, vegetarian and meat dishes, such as risotto, pork belly and rack of lamb.
With superb food, a laidback ambience, and a spectacular shore-hugging location, Harbour House Kalk Bay remains a firm favourite in this vibrant village.
