Hermanus restaurant: Lizette’s Kitchen

Housed in one of the first farmsteads in Voëlklip (built in the 1920s), Lizette’s Kitchen was given a complete overhaul before opening its doors a few years back. It provides some much-needed sophistication to the food scene of this laidback seaside village. The spacious indoor and outdoor seating areas flow into one another through folding doors that bring the mountain views in. Many of the original features were retained, such as the oregon floors, exposed timber beams and the two open fireplaces, adding character, and walls were knocked down to create an open-plan lounge and bar area. There’s even a children’s play area, so you can bring the whole family along.

The food

Chef Lizette Crabtree spent four years as a chef in the Franschhoek Valley before enjoying a stint as the executive chef at a five-star restaurant in Saigon, Vietnam, where she met her partner Scott, who co-owns the restaurant. As such, her fusion menu reflects her South African roots as well as her Asian sojourn.

Some of the most popular Asian dishes include tom yum soup with chicken, pho bo (beef-and-noodle soup) made with fish sauce, coriander, chilli and basil, and heo kho to (five-spice caramel pork) with a generous serving of quail eggs.

African and Mediterranean flavours are evident in dishes such as the Moroccan-scented squid and tabbouleh and the finger-licking-good Mozambican prawns with peri-peri. You must order at least one artisanal flatbread for the table – a thin-crust base topped with a basil-tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese – to mop up the sauces of one of the curries or fusion dishes.

The varied menu is ever-changing and prices range from R74 to R89 (for gourmet burgers); R68 to R85 (for flatbreads with various sides); R60 to R75 (for 6 or 8 spring rolls); and R87 to R98 for a noodle bowl.
