Mint Restaurant & Wood-Fired Grill at Taj Cape Town: A Braai in the City

Mint Restaurant

Fire-cooking with a cosmopolitan twist in the inner city.

With its alfresco terrace spilling out onto St Georges Mall, Mint Restaurant & Wood-Fired Grill at Taj Cape Town channels the buzz of the city centre and offers a delicious break at any time of day. As its name implies, there’s a new focus to the menu – it’s all about cooking over embers, combining Indian influences with the South African braai tradition.

Shades of burnt orange and red, warm textures, light-wood tables and eye-catching light fittings make it a pleasing place to enjoy a meal from dawn until after dark. The mezzanine tables are ideal for private dinners, business lunches or celebrations, while comfortable couch seating and suspended umbrellas turn the terrace into an ideal innercity spot to relax and watch the world go by.

The floor-to-ceiling wine wall is an indication that Mint takes its wine offering seriously, too.

All-day dining

The fire-cooking theme stretches to a host of familiar favourites – with added tasty twists and local flavour combinations. Opt for a gourmet sandwich (masala steak, tandoori chicken, lamb doner, or a classic Taj club) or a burger (beef or vegetarian). There’s also pizza and salads, and starters ranging from soup and tacos to kudu carpaccio and Indian pakoras.

Mains are sizzlingly delicious wood-fired steaks, lamb chops or prawns, with a choice of sauces and sides, while specialities include slow-roasted lamb shank, beef riblets, sticky chicken wings, linefish niçoise, and a seafood tagliatelle or risotto.

The curry section (both Indian and Cape Malay) tempts diners with classics like lamb rogan josh, butter chicken and biryani, as well as a distinctively South African “bunny chow” (curry served in a hollowed-out loaf of bread).

For the perfect ending, dessert choices include tiramisu, cheesecake and a secret brownie sundae (who could resist?) – and for those without a sweet tooth, a Cape cheese board.
