New York Bagels Cape Town reopens in Gardens
The best bagel shop on the continent has reopened – in Harrington Street.

When New York Bagels (NYB) closed its doors in December 2013, after a 20-year stint on Sea Point Main Road (and being in business since 1940), bagel buffs from around the peninsula were at a loss. I have a colleague who would drive from the southern suburbs to the end of Sea Point to get her bagel fix when the craving took hold! That’s how addictive NYB’s bagels are! So, when we heard that it had reopened in Gardens in October, we were elated, and we imagine that its legion of loyal patrons were, too.
NYB comes with a wealth of heritage, while still managing to satisfy modern tastebuds. NYB specialises in traditional, hand-rolled bagels, and is also a destination for great coffee. In addition to fresh-out-the-oven bagels with delicious fillings, there’s also an impressive selection of pastries and cakes, all made in-house. Those with a sweet tooth will delight in the chocolate croissants and traditional baked cheesecake!

Time Monday – Friday, 7am – 4pm
Saturday, 8am – 1pm

You all on crack they have the best Bagels in Cape Town and they are not trying to be a Deli but as a Bagel shop they are certainly making an impression as from open to close they are never empty not a lot of eateries in Cape Town can boast that statistic.

The bagels are soft and small. These are simply rolls with a hole in the middle and bear no resemblance to a genuine New York bagel at all. And they stint on the fillings. My roast beef bagel had a sliver of processed beef with a few gherkin slices. No relish at all. On inquiry, they said they ran out. They didn’t even bother to tell me. You’ll get a better sandwich at any garage shop and better value too. Maybe one day someone will open a proper deli. But not these guys.

The sandwich contents are fine, but the bagels are not real bagels. They are very bready and overly soft, without the (closer-to-REAL-New-York-bagels) that the Sea Point New York bagels used to have. Still waiting on a real New York bagel in Cape Town.
