Newport Deli reopens
One of Cape Town’s best-loved delis reopens a few doors down…

When Allan & Briony Schapiro opened Newport Deli in 1997 with the aim of bringing a Venice Beach-style seaside deli to Cape Town, where people could enjoy the sights and sounds of the ocean, Capetonians were sold! So much so that Newport became an institution on the Green Point strip for almost 17 years – and was the go-to spot for promenade walkers, business meetings, ladies who lunch and coffee-shop regulars, among others! Needless to say, when the deli closed at the beginning of last year, its patrons were a little distressed… until they found out that Newport Market & Deli had plans to reopen in December – in the Amalfi building in Mouille Point, across the road from the lighthouse.
Newport has always prided itself on serving healthy, fresh and good-quality food. The popular homemade muesli with fresh fruit salad, honey and yogurt is a breakfast favourite; light lunches include a choice of wraps (we love the Louisiana, filled with Cajun chicken and avocado), salads (the Avo, Parmesan & Pine-nut salad comes recommended), stuffed pitas and pastas.
The smoothie menu deserves a once-over! I love the Mango Madness (mango, banana and pawpaw), but the refreshing Snowberry, a brand-new addition for summer, is divine. It’s made with homemade frozen yoghurt, which comes in a variety of flavours such as vanilla, English toffee, wild strawberry, mango and pine.
Newport’s deli section has always been known for stocking a wide range of good-quality imported goods – from lumpfish caviar and Norwegian hot smoked salmon to Colombian coffee beans, French champagne and Swiss chocolate. There’s also a proudly local section stocked with fresh fruit and veg, fine wines and bubblies, cheeses, charcuterie, mouthwatering pastries, home-baked bread (ciabattas, pumpkin-seed rolls, rye, bagels, baguettes, kitke and more).
So, next time you’re planning a trip to the beach, swing by Newport to stock up on some grub. And then, without further ado, make straight for the sand, picnic goodies in hand.
