A cut above.
In the upper section of the Newlands Quarter on Dean Street, Patina adds a layer of elegance to the steak experience, with a varied menu, fine wine, whiskies and cocktails, too. The interiors are sleek yet inviting, with American walnut tables and chairs, wooden floors, leather banquettes, and an upmarket vibe that still feels relaxed.
Part of the Copper Collection (alongside sibling restaurants The Terrace and Botany, which sit right next door), Patina started out life at D’Aria Wine Estate in the Durbanville Valley in 2017, where it continues to thrive. The return of the Newlands branch (in late 2023) after a three-year hiatus allows southern-suburbs locals to enjoy its winning combination of excellent food and polished service, without having to head out of town.
Steak haute
Perfectly prepared Chalmar steaks are, of course, the main event at Patina… tender juicy Chateaubriand, succulent ribeye, melt-in-the-mouth fillet, T-bone with marrow bones. But the rest of the menu is well worth exploring: sizzling Norwegian salmon, calamari tubes on a creamy parmesan risotto, beef carpaccio (with pickled shallots, mustard seeds, radish, smoked salt and olive oil) and a whole roast cauliflower. The sides, too, are a cut above, from the crispy onion rings to truffle fries, or the delicious sweet-potato fries.
In your glass
A rather alluring list of local wines by the carafe (250ml) encourages a sipping journey of exploration from Klein Constantia to Springfield and Buitenverwachting. After the curated winelist comes a selection of sprightly cocktails (fancy a Gin Lollipop, an Amaretto Sours, or a Spicy Sex on the Beach?). And then a long list of whisky and bourbon by the shot that shows they take whisky seriously (a dedicated whisky-keeping service allows regulars to store their personal bottles between visits).
Sweet finale
When it comes to dessert, the classics say it all. Who needs anything more complicated than a perfect crème brûlée, baked cheesecake or a decadent chocolate brownie to end off a celebratory meal.
Raising the steaks along with your spirits, Patina is the perfect spot for any occasion from date night to family get-togethers or business lunches.
