The Red Room: A Sophisticated Pan-Asian Eatery at The Mount Nelson

A red-hot addition to Cape Town’s impressive foodscape.

Liam Tomlin’s newest restaurant has flung open its doors at The Mount Nelson! Aptly named The Red Room, it occupies the space that was formerly The Grill Room (back in the 80s this downstairs venue was the Cape Town hotspot for elegant dinner dances). It’s recently been transformed into an opulent speakeasy-esque stage (in shades of red, naturally) for a sublime pan-Asian feast of small plates

A beautiful narrative runs through the design, taking you on a journey from east to west through the multicultural pan-Asian universe: gorgeous upholstery, evocative textures and design details, and stage-struck lighting, expect a sense of theatre as well as the Chefs Warehouse calling card of fabulous food.

Diners are greeted with two curated moments: relax into a cosy deep-velvet booth with a tea-infused cocktail or sake and sample any one of the flavour-packed small plates from the à la carte menu, including grilled scallops with tom yum foam and kombu butter, or Korean BBQ pork steamed buns. Alternatively, sink into a corner of the lavish dining room to enjoy a four-course set menu to share. The star of the show Peking duck delivers the perfect crescendo to the meal, accompanied by duck consommé, dumplings, and marinated tofu.

Headed up by chef David Schneider of Chefs Warehouse Maison (which is sadly closing its doors in May), with chefs de cuisine Geoffrey Abrahams and Teenola Govender, The Red Room opened on 14 April 2023, adding another exciting eatery to the Nellie’s culinary repertoire.

We can’t wait to see what David, Liam and their capable team have put together for this brand-new urban eatery that drips with heritage and style.
