The Legendary Schoon Bakery Opens in Somerset West

The Legendary Schoon Bakery Opens in Somerset West

Lovers of loaves and addicts of caffeine: Get your daily bread here!

When owners Fritz and Chanelle Schoon announced that they were closing their beloved Schoon De Companje in Stellenbosch after seven fruitful years in business, discerning caffeine addicts, patisserie worshippers and bread-oholics were disappointed (to put it mildly). The iconic café on the bustling corner of Bird and Church Streets was not only a cool meeting place for coffee and a pastry/ breakfast/ a light meal, its deli section was a convenient place to stock up on treats and essentials before heading home.

Fortunately for the Stellenbosch community, the Schoons handed over their erstwhile Stellies shop to the owners of Boschendal Wines, whose ethical and sustainable farm-to-table approach to food echoes their own. The Boschendal folk reverted to its original name – Boschendal at Oude Bank – and they continue to serve honest-to-goodness food and drinks.

HELLO SOMERSET WEST!

But, getting back to Fritz and Chanelle… if, like us, you were wondering what they’ve been up to since selling to Boschendal five months ago – wonder, no more! The couple have opened a teeny weeny shop in neighbouring Somerset West. Says Fritz: “The move signifies a return to Schoon’s central ethos: delicious food, sustainable and real ingredients within a warm, intimate atmosphere – and a penchant for quality bread. We had to make major restructuring decisions in order to refocus on the simple components that we enjoyed in our small bakery a couple of years ago.”

And, if first impressions are anything to go by, it seems the Somerset West community has welcomed this newcomer with open arms. “We’ve always received so much support from our Somerset West following,” explains Fritz.

Located on bustling Bright Street (Somerset West’s answer to Bree Street), the petite shop offers loads of parking (at the front and side of the building, and just behind it, accessed by a driveway to the right), and is perfect for a delicious sit-down meal, on-the-run coffee, or to stock up on croissants and baked treats.

BACK TO STELLIES?

The couple says more small-style outlets are set to follow this Somerset West launch. “We will re-open in Stellies. That’s a promise!” says Fritz.

Also in the works is a Schoon Manufactory – a creative, experimental kitchen and grain-focused bakery and patisserie. Subscribe to our newsletter, and we’ll keep you posted.
