It’s no wonder that sundowners are the preferred pastime for most Capetonians (and visitors to our shores) – Cape Town is outrageously ravishing, particularly when the golden hour strikes and paints the surrounding landscape a kaleidoscopic watercolour of pinks, oranges and reds.

So, we’re constantly on the lookout for watering holes where we can drink in the majesty of the ocean-meets-mountain topography. And we recently stumbled upon just the spot…

Perched high above the humming city on the seventh floor of The Hyde Hotel, Skye Rooftop Bar offers a vertical respite from street life below, and beckons with a sparkling pool, stellar views, tasty food, a selection of crafty cocktails and an upbeat vibe.

A scattering of tables, with unhindered views of Lion’s Head and the Atlantic Ocean, is covered by a retractable roof that acts as a shelter from UV rays in summer and rain in winter – making it a wonderful spot for after-work drinks or lazy weekend hangouts by the cosy fireplace all year round.

In addition to wine, beers, bubbly and spirits, there’s a vast cocktail list boasting classics (whiskey sours, old fashioneds, daiquiris and piña coladas) as well as innovative creations, such as Hyde gimlets, blueberry gin sours, red pepper caipirinhas and gin meadows.

And, despite its name, Skye Bar offers an extensive food menu that pays homage to owner Rod Hemphill’s Mozambican roots. Starters include oysters, mussels, chicken wings, tuna sashimi, and jalapeño croquettes, with the likes of fresh salads, burgers, fillet, prawn-and-chorizo pasta, and gourmet prego rolls for mains. There are even dessert options, with warm and attentive service adding to the overall experience.
