A chic meeting place for sundowners and tapas.
The lobby at the Taj Cape Town is one of those iconic spaces that grace the historic heart of the Mother City – fluted marble pillars, high vaulted ceilings, marble floors and sash windows looking out over St George’s Cathedral. All this grandeur stems from its history as Cape Town’s former Reserve Bank. A recent refurb has given the lounge and adjacent bar a glam new look, without foregoing its heritage grandeur.
The Lobby Bar
Offering signature cocktails such as the Taj Old Fashioned and Taj Mahal, mimosas and kir royales, classic martinis, negronis or margaritas, the Lobby Bar’s bartenders have your cocktail cravings covered. Add a curated menu of wines by the glass, draught beers, craft gins and a prestigious range of local and international spirits, and every sipping pleasure is shaken or stirred to perfection.
On the menu
To go with your tipple of choice is a selection of global tapas. Asian flavours (twice-cooked pork belly yakitori skewers, corn tempura with wasabi mayo) and a touch of India (masala papadams with tomato sambal, Punjabi aloo matar samosas) will delight spice lovers. There’s also German flammekueche, sticky chicken wings, a Med-style mezze board, or a South African meat and cheese platter and smoked snoek pâté.
In addition, a classic sushi menu (with a few vegetarian options) is designed to pair perfectly with bubbly – the choice of local cap classiques come by the glass or bottle.
New chef
The new menu heralds the arrival of new Taj executive chef Surendra Kumar, who has worked in top kitchens around the world. His culinary arsenal includes not only the dishes of his homeland, India, but also the classic flavours of France, Italy, Greece, Lebanon, the Middle East and Far East. Surendra is led by a passion for food and the Sanskrit philosophy of atithi devo bhava: “the guest is god” – ensuring everyone is welcomed and taken care of.
He’s looking forward to exploring South Africa’s flavours and favourite tastes. Watch this space for more innovative dining experiences coming soon to the Taj.
The Whisky Lounge
Fine whiskies in crystal glasses, leather couches, old black-and-white photos on the exposed brick wall… this intimate enclave off the main lobby is a sophisticated space to browse the Taj’s extensive whisky collection and contemplate the finer things in life. Take a tipple trip around the world with guided tastings of whiskies from Scotland, Ireland, America, Japan, Taiwan, India and more.
