New restaurant in Tamboerskloof: The Blue Café

If you frequented the neighbourhood around Brownlow Road in the mid-90s, you would be au fait with The Daily Deli, a hidden gem of a place, sharing pavement space with a string of of exquisite Victorian semi-detached houses. It was a Tamboerskloof institute – the sort of place today’s hipsters would have overrun if they’d been around back in the day…

The big news is that The Blue Café recently opened its doors where the Daily Deli was, after months of renovation. The outside is painted in an inviting shade of blue, while the tiny interior has a shelved wall on one side, stocked with delicious homemade baked goods and preserves, and a counter groaning with with all sorts of delectable treats in the centre. All the tables are outside on the pavement under a shaded overhang, with hanging plant baskets adding to the laidback European vibe. The only clue that you’re in the Mother City is the unhindered view of Lion’s Head! A cosy candle-lit “secret” basement has seating for rainy days.

The deli is stocked with sandwiches, cakes, fudge, Amsterdammers, cold meats, cheese and all-natural ice creams. The shelves are packed with artisanal bread from Knead and Eurohaus, canned artichokes, passata tomato sauce, pasta, tea and a host of delicious home-made preserves, as well as emergency supplies such as toothpaste and soap.

For now, the menu is limited to croissants, sandwiches, toast and cake (including a Banting version) for breakfast, and cheese and meat platters for lunch or a light dinner. Over time, more homemade dishes, such as macaroni cheese, will be added to the menu. There are two coffee blends available: Tomeucci and a Truth Coffee blend.
