The Dairy Shed: A MTB Café + Brewery on a Farm in Durbanville

Durbanville is home to some of the most popular mountain-biking trails in the northern suburbs, but only one can lay claim to The Dairy Shed: a quirky café that doubles as a coffee pitstop for mountain-bikers, and also serves delectable pizza and beer from its on-site microbrewery.

Though rustic and relaxed, The Dairy Shed doesn’t miss a beat with its menu, nor does it fall short in the looks department – thanks to its heritage exterior (dating back to 1920) and verdant surroundings.

Coffee, carrot cake, pizza + more

Contermanskloof Farm in Durbanville is a family-owned property, whose proprietor Robert Starke is an avid mountain-biker (hence the regular riding contingent gathered at outside tables on any given weekend). He recently added a taproom, Starke Brews, to the offering that serves beer, naturally, and the most delicious pizzas to all and sundry.

The ethos of The Dairy Shed is simple: a welcoming space that offers quality coffee and scrumptious food. There’s nothing high-brow or complicated on the menu, but everything that comes out of the kitchen is done well. The coffee, for example, made using Deluxe beans, and the food menu features a selection of classics such as ciabatta sandwiches, croissants and other baked goodies. The star of the show is, undoubtedly, the carrot cake, which has stolen the hearts of all who’ve tried it. It’s fresh, homemade and perfectly moist – we’ve even heard of people taking up mountain-biking as an excuse to earn a slice.

Looking for more than coffee and cake? The beer garden outside doles out the most delicious pizza, which, accompanied by a couple of beers – and live music on Saturdays – makes for a heavenly day in the country.
