The Hot Skillet

Their philosophy is simple: “We just want you to be happy, and leave full.”

From the stars of My Kitchen Rules, Gomotsegang Modiselle (G) and Oginga Siwundla (OG), comes this light- and art-filled space that was born in answer to the question: “Where in Cape Town can we eat your food?”
And what a location they have found – inside the glorious Young Blood Gallery on Bree Street. They’ve started with a small 10-item menu that offers breakfast and lunch staples, with coffee, water or rooibos on the side.
But the focus means that the dishes they are turning out are superb – we had the Eggs Royale on a toasted muffin with smoked salmon and hollandaise and it was excellent. But not quite as excellent as the stand-out Banger & Eggs, which crammed grilled pork sausages, eggs, onion, homemade mustard, mayo and smoked cheddar on to a Portuguese roll for a flavour explosion. We ended the meal with French Toast with a twist – cinnamon kitke rolled in crushed cornflakes with vanilla mascarpone and maple syrup. Divine.
The combination of simple yet delicious breakfast and lunch dishes – and the amazing space – will make you want to return again and again. That, and their emphasis on people relaxing and enjoying themselves – the tables are spaced far apart, the wi-fi is free, the music is good, and there’s no hurry to leave. top of
Keep an eye on this space – it feels like the start of something special.
Insider tip The chefs are available for private catering, and the gallery space is available for hire. It would make the most amazing birthday party or wedding venue…
