The Waterside: La Colombe’s Smart-Casual Seaside Eatery
The La Colombe family of restaurants has garnered a well-deserved reputation for top-notch dining, with some of the best chefs in the business working their magic to create extraordinary dining experiences. From the original flagship in the Constantia wine valley, there are now seven restaurants in the stable, the most recent of which is an ocean-facing sibling called The Waterside.
Found in the Pierhead building at the V&A Waterfront, The Waterside promises sumptuous summer lunches and early suppers with views of Table Bay. Complementing the easy-breezy location, away from the bustle of the main Victoria Wharf district, The Waterside has a casual fine-dining menu. It’s still sophisticated and creative, in the La Colombe style, but more suited to impromptu pop-ins.
Land and sea
Head chef Roxy Mudie has worked alongside Scot Kirton for over seven years, and is now ready to spread her wings. A peek at her menu reveals glorious ocean-inspired surf-and-turf combinations – seabass and mussels with Black Forest ham; pork belly with scallops; crayfish cooked over the coals, served with roast quail – as well as oysters in an umami broth with caviar; Wagyu steak, and a “treasure chest” of bonbons for a sweet finish.
Delicious duo
Dishes will change according to the best produce available at the time, with vegetarian versions available on request. To start with, there will be a four-course menu with options on each course, along with bread and snacks/palate cleansers.
The Waterside is on the ground floor of the building, with both indoor seating and tables out on the deck. And upstairs? The other new La Colombe restaurant, PIER, which offers a more formal, multi-course fine-dining experience.
Cost R695 (four-course menu)
