A sartorial haven for the modern man.
The idea behind FIELDS is both simple and profound. A contemporary wardrobe for today’s multifaceted man, revolving around three lifestyle lines – Soul, Outdoor and Art – with timeless pieces that can be layered and collected through the years.
It’s the opposite of trend-driven, seasonally hyped fashion, allowing the smart-dressed man to indulge his love of fine clothing with “considered consumption”. This ties in with the “conscious creation” of all FIELDS items, crafted from sustainable, natural fibres sourced in southern Africa.
What doesn’t go out of fashion are garments that are well-tailored for comfort, classic in style and made to be durable. The signature designs and silhouettes stay intrinsically the same (why mess with perfection?), but are released from time to time with a slight tweak in fabric, detailing and colour. (Point of interest: garments are named after their Pantone shade.)
Step out of the box
Designer and founder Mikael Hanan launched FIELDS in 2019, wanting to take a different approach to the production of fashion. He recognised that 21st-century men play different roles at different times, and so the three FIELDS lines explore these various facets: “Soul” is leisurewear separates, “Outdoor” is resilient activewear, “Art” is formal workwear.
Now on his 10th collection, titled “In Flow”, the range includes a new Daily Trousers silhouette, soft denim shirts and pants, and a handprinted striped box T-shirt. On the accessories side, new in store are the “All I Need” and “Is It Small Enough” leather bags.
Art on your sleeve
The “Art” aspect is also celebrated in regular collaborations with artists, taking their work and creating limited-edition wearable art in the form of a sweater, the inner lining of the signature Field Jacket and a tote bag. Mikael says it allows the wearer to express themselves by “living in the art they appreciate”, and also gives exposure to local creative talent.
The latest partnership is with master ceramicist Andile Dyalvane – the first time FIELDS has translated three-dimensional art into garments. Andile’s work for FIELDS was inspired by the idea of a journey and “state of flow”.
Conscious creation
FIELDS garments are meticulously created from start to finish. There’s the sourcing of the wool, mohair and cotton (from accredited ethical farms), to working closely with dyers and factories to manufacture high-quality, often custom fabrics, and artisans to make the accessories. It’s all about supporting the local economy.
In line with its “slow-fashion” philosophy, FIELDS offers an in-house alteration service and repairs at their flagship store, to extend the lifespan of a beloved garment.
The FIELDS flagship store and studio is at the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock, with a second outlet recently opened at the V&A Waterfront – a serenely stylish space, with a rainbow of neatly stacked shirts, trousers, shorts and sweaters, that perfectly evokes the brand’s ethos. Step inside and find yourself.
