One of the most recognised jewellery brands in South Africa, Pichulik was founded by Katherine-Mary Pichulik in 2013, inspired by African mythology and empowering feminine symbolism.
The sculptural pieces, distinguishable by the innovative use of re-purposed rope, combined with cast-brass elements and precious stones, are handcrafted by Pichulik´s team of women and have graced the pages of Vogue, the ears of Meghan Markle, and the shelves of MOMA New York.
Pichulik’s new Atelier
A charming double-storey heritage building just off Bree Street, Pichulik’s Atelier and flagship retail space is an oasis of calm and beauty amid the city bustle. Wooden floors and white-moulded walls are a backdrop to sculptural pottery and origami-inspired Xandre Kriel furniture, which set the scene for a sumptuous shopping experience. The showstopper, of course, is the treasure trove of unique, handcrafted jewellery, displayed among a collection of vintage books, ceramics and floral designs.
Upstairs is where the magic happens: the operations and production team in full creative mode among reels of gorgeous coloured ropes and twine. “We wanted to create a space where we could bring the community of Pichulik women together,” say Katherine-Mary and Tracey Chiappini-Young, the duo behind the brand. “PIchulik’s heritage is storytelling, craft and creativity and the Atelier celebrates this.”
The Algiers Collection
Pichulik’s latest SS23 collection explores Katherine-Mary’s family history, which she traces back to her paternal grandmother’s birthplace in a remote region of the Aures mountains in northeast Algeria. The circles and intricate designs of colourful braided rope embellished with brass, she says, are an allegory for memory, ancestry, and the layered tapestry of life and identity. “We are the accumulation of the dreams of generations.”
