Hand-designed leather bags made with passion and purpose.
When made well, the perfect leather bag is one of those timeless staples that’s not only practical, but also aesthetically pleasing (a classic case of form following function). Which is why when shopping for one, quality is a priority, as you’ll want yours to last a lifetime. Enter ROWDY – a local company that manufactures good-looking, affordable leather bags that are practical, versatile and easy to wear.
With humble roots dating back to 2012, ROWDY was taken over by entrepreneur Adam Young in 2018, who grew the company into the flourishing creative brand it is today.
“I’d been attracted to the brand from the start,” recalls Adam, “In fact, I was one of its first customers! I purchased my ROWDY rucksack out of the founder’s car boot on the corner of Kloof Street. After working at the company for almost two years, I gained a deep appreciation for the people and the product, so when the business came up for sale, I knew I should make an offer.”
Since taking the reins, Adam has introduced new styles and colours: there are now 13 items (including travel, business and totes) across nine shades. All items are available to purchase online (via their website), at their brick-and-mortar shop in Salt River, or every Saturday at the Neighbourgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill.
Bags of worth
Created using natural, free-range African leather, each one of ROWDY’s high-quality bags is designed for longevity and practicality, with a special focus on continually upskilling the team and spreading the ROWDY philosophy of “embracing basic goodness” and doing that which makes you feel positive.
ROWDY’s team of leather artisans, makes each bag from start to finish, ensuring your item is a perfected masterpiece.

ROWDY’s factory store in Salt River, a revitalised area known for its vibrant creativity, echoes the brand’s creative ethos. Outside, visitors are greeted with a mural by local street artist Paul Seynol (inspired by the brand’s two limited-edition shades, Boulder and Root), while inside, a light-filled interior adorned with plants, industrial-style bag displays, vibey music and the gentle hum of sewing machines sets the scene for an authentic shopping experience.
Should you prefer to do your shopping via your keyboard, you can browse the entire collection online, where sling, tote, shopper, rucksack, briefcase, duffel and laptop bags (along with a few other exciting accessories) are available to order for delivery to your door.
If you find yourself at The Neighbourgoods Market at The Old Biscuit Mill on a Saturday morning, be sure to check out ROWDY’s stall. Joburg shoppers can browse the ROWDY range at 44 Stanley Lifestyle Centre.
Says Adam: “Step by step, we want to grow ROWDY into a brand that is loved and supported worldwide, renowned for its determination and value-driven ethos.”
Seems like ROWDY’s well on its way to bagging those achievements.
