The experience BK, as it’s affectionately known, is a charming Victorian homestead on a Swartland wheat, sheep and almond farm amid the 4 000-hectare Elandsberg Nature Reserve. In addition to a vast dam, a boathouse filled with watersports gear (and mountain bikes), a waterside restaurant and endless access to nature, each of the three accommodation offerings has a storybook garden (think rose bushes, bougainvillaea, daffodils, forget-me-nots and more). Indoors, it’s all old-world charm, from antiques and heirlooms to plush furnishings. The Parker family, who’ve been here for 90 years, are passionate conservationists; as such, there’s a firm focus on responsible tourism, community care and the environment (visit the tortoise sanctuary and quagga project, and enjoy farm walks and trails). Fans of the Netflix series The Crown will be delighted to know that an episode of the first season was filmed here – an indication of what’s on offer at this magnificent property.

The lodgings The Farmhouse has five suites (one in the garden), three lounges (one with a fireplace), a wraparound verandah and saltwater pool. Accommodation is on a full-board basis, with brunch, high tea and a four-course dinner in the Conservatory restaurant, plus daily guided nature drives included. Or choose the self-catering serenity of Heron House (sleeps 12) or Wild Olive House (sleeps 6), both with private pools and braai areas.
