A mere three-hour drive from Cape Town along the scenic Whale Route lies De Hoop Nature Reserve – a seaside sanctuary characterised by a dreamy vlei and vast, wide-open spaces. While you’re there

One of the highlights of our stay at this tranquil get-away-from-it-all reserve was dining at The Fig Tree restaurant, whose capacious lounge area has comfy couches and a fireplace, perfect for post-prandial chilling. The spacious verandah, with unhindered views of the vlei, is the only place to be when the sun sets, with flocks of pelicans and flamingos completing the picture.

For those seeking a relaxing diversion, the reserve offers an array of scenic walks and bike rides (there are bikes to rent). There’s also the nearby beach, Koppie Alleen, where whales frolic during season (June to November). Or, settle under one of the ancient milkwoods with a good book…

Feeling intrepid? Book a marine or guided bird-watching walk, or sail away on an Eco Cruise on the Ramsar-listed vlei, followed by a game of tennis and boules.
