Tryn at Steenberg: Tuesday Date Night

Rekindle the romance with a delectable dinner for two.

It’s that time of year: we’re all feeling a little depleted and in need of a breather before “the festive season” kicks in good and proper. Why not set aside some treasured time to reconnect with your significant other over a thoughtfully designed dinner for two?

Date night at Tryn

Tryn Steenberg Restaurant Date Special

Tuesdays at Tryn have taken on a new meaning since this Steenberg Farm restaurant introduced Date Night. The perfect opportunity to have some together time with your partner, the Tryn team, helmed by chef Kerry Kilpin, has devised a seasonal menu that’s diverse and ticks all the boxes that discerning diners will appreciate. Kerry is well-loved for pairing flavourful sauces with her favourite cuts of meat and fish, and she doesn’t disappoint with the Date Night set menu. Likewise, her love of beautifully prepared vegetables shines through with the lighter menu options that are as delicious as their meaty counterparts.

I arrived early, which I love doing at Tryn because the decor really is very beautiful and I always love taking a little time to appreciate the thought that has gone into creating such a stylish space. The palette of natural wood underfoot, metallic touches and velvets in mustard, forest-green and dirty pink is sophisticated and soothing, and the sense of being immersed into the vineyard outside always feels like a joy.

The menu

Husband likes a tart Cosmopolitan as much as I do – and it’s happily one of the choices on the Date Night menu, which changes regularly. There are always three choices of starters, such as oysters, soup, a beautifully plated salad or salt-and-pepper squid.

We opted to share-share (because that’s what makes date night great) the squid and a goat’s cheese salad, dressed with edible flowers, drizzled with macadamia-and-spinach pesto and dotted with grilled nectarines. It looked sensational and tasted even better, a lovely light and multi-layered flavour and texture experience.

The squid was served on a sesame slaw and drenched in a wasabi mayo, which we enjoyed with a glass of Steenberg Brut Rosé that, along with the estate’s award-winning, Black Swan Sauvignon Blanc 2020 is a perennial favourite.

Tryn Date Night Special Menu

I was delighted to note Abalobi linefish on the Date Night menu (chef Kerry Kilpin was the first chef to pilot the innovative Abalobi programme: a sustainable fish drive that only sells fairly traded fish) and my perfectly cooked fillet of bream was served on a bed of harissa-laced corn and shimeji mushrooms and came with two aubergine and mozzarella parcels. To be able to eat fish that was likely still swimming that morning really is a privilege.

As with the squid, this is a saucy dish, which may not be to everyone’s taste but it certainly was for mine. My husband had the steak – a perfect portion of seared sirloin served on a glorious celeriac and garlic purée and a mushroom jus with a crunchy mushroom croquette on the side.

The Date Night offering is succinct and doesn’t include a dessert – instead our excellent waiter Caleb Valerga brought two handmade chocolate fondants emblazoned with the estate’s elegant swan motif to close off our dinner a deux. It was a delicious, well-curated – and well-priced – opportunity to connect with each other over gorgeous food and a cocktail. Bravo Tryn – making going out great again!
