Boschendal Norval Art Gallery: What’s On Show This Winter

Already known for its wine, food and outdoor adventures, Boschendal also offers a noteworthy dose of art and culture. A collaboration between the Cape Town-based Norval Foundation and the Franschhoek wine farm, the gallery aims to create a unique and extraordinary visitor experience with a changing series of exhibitions.

The centuries-old Manor House creates a provocative space in which to view modern artworks from Africa – a place where old meets new – creating a nuanced dialogue between past and present.

What’s on show this winter?

There are two winter group exhibitions: Horizon (on until 27 September 2022) and Vessel (on until 15 August 2022).

Horizon takes landscapes as its theme, and brings together over 30 works ranging from the early 20th century to contemporary works by the likes of Maggie Laubser, JH Pierneef, David Goldblatt and Nita Spilhaus (all drawn from the revered Sanlam Art Collection). The works are as diverse as the South African landscapes they depict.

Vessel, the second exhibition, is an extension of landscape in the sense that it is land transformed into object. It celebrates local ceramic artists Ben Orkin, Jade Paton and Alistair Blair, along with selected artists from online Art Gazette and artisanal flower arrangements by Mr Munro. Best of all for design lovers, the unique pieces are available to purchase.

Art in the park

In addition to the indoor exhibitions, the grounds surrounding the Manor House also showcase outdoor art: currently, large-scale works by Kyle Morland and iconic 20th-century SA sculptor Eduordo Villa.

A bespoke art retail shop has also been introduced, including ceramics by Githan Coopoo specially designed for Boschendal, that complements the farm’s existing range of locally sourced goods.
