Chart Farm: Pick Your Own Roses at this Scenic Farm in Wynberg

Chart Farm: Pick Your Own Roses at this Scenic Farm in Wynberg Stephanie Marthinus

Nothing says “summer” like the heavenly scent of roses in the air.

A fragrant bunch of pastel-coloured hand-picked wild roses is the acme of luxury. So, why not spoil a friend or loved one by popping in with a beautiful bouquet? Of course, you’ll have to pick them first…

Flower Power

Chart Farm is a serene farm in Wynberg, a mere 15-minute drive from the CBD. It’s a real treat for flower lovers, as it is home to a large garden filled with a variety of wild roses in almost every colour you can imagine. It also happens to be the only place in the Cape peninsula where you can pick your own, from mid-October right up until the end of June.

On arrival, you will be given a pair of secateurs and picking trays before heading into the garden. Pick-your-own roses cost R5.30 each (R3.50 on Sundays), while ready-picked stems – for those not keen on doing their own picking – go for R6.50 each. Part of the fun is deciding which ones to pick and arranging them in a beautiful bouquet – which makes a lovely (and affordable) gift.

When you’re done picking roses…

Have a cup of tea and scones at The View, Chart Farm’s charming coffee shop. The restaurant serves breakfast and lunch, and an array of cakes that you can enjoy along with the the scent of the redolent roses and amazing views of Constantia Valley. You can also stock up on tasty treats from the farm stall next door.
