Visit up to eight wine farms in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.
If you ever had an iota of doubt about the appeal and world-class impressiveness of the Western Cape Winelands, it’s been voted among the 10 best wine-producing regions of the world by Wine Folly (2013), Wine Traveller (2017), and Vine Pair (2018). And while most out-of-town oenophiles flock to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek for their vino fix, the Hemel-en-Aarde region should not be overlooked merely because it’s a little further from Cape Town’s city centre.
How it works
These unique tours of the Hermanus Wine Route start and end at the Village Market (on Market Square Street) and cost R300 for the day (R150 for children under 18).
You’ll have the opportunity to visit up to eight wine farms in the Hemel-en-Aarde region from the comfort of a safari-style van. These green vehicles follow a set route that allows passengers to hop on and off as they please.
And because the vehicles circle the route every 20 to 30 minutes from 9am until 4.30pm, you can spend an hour or two at each winery taking in the beauty, tasting the nectar, and even enjoying an alfresco meal (wine tastings, meals, and all wine farm activities are done at your own expense).
The bonus is that you need not lug the wine you purchase from winery to winery; simply leave them with the driver who will drop them off at the ticket office where they can be collected on your return (with a valid voucher and proof of ID).
Good to Know
- Safari vehicles drop off and pick up passengers at wineries along the route every 30 minutes.
- Come rain or shine, you can still experience the breathtaking beauty of the Hermanus wine route as the vehicles have roll-down panels to protect passengers from the elements.
