Kleine Zalze Wine-Tasting: Two New Cap Classiques Steal the Spotlight

Whether you’re a Cape Town local or an out-of-towner intent on sampling the best of the Stellenbosch Winelands, Kleine Zalze is a destination well worth visiting for its utterly drinkable and award-winning wines, and its light lunch offerings on the oak-shaded terrace.

A sparkling sweet spot

The estate produces four ranges, which include diverse varietals from cabernet sauvignon and shiraz to chardonnay, chenin blanc and sauvignon blanc, and has recently added two new cap classiques to its award-winning collection of bubblies.

The new cap classiques are Kleine Zalze’s first in the Nectar style. Slightly sweeter than a brut cap classique but still in the traditional style, Kleine Zalze Nectar and Kleine Zalze Nectar Rosé are fruit-forward and multi-layered.

“When the popularity of French Champagne really began taking off in the 19th century, the wines offered were sweet,” says winemaker, Lizemari Geldenhuys. “So a fruitier classic sparkling wine, such as Nectar cap classique, is by no means a recent addition to this wine style. It is still important that the wine is bracingly fresh and lively, the most-loved feature of cap classique, that results from picking the grapes at levels of energetic acidity.”

In February 2023, Kleine Zalze is offering a free tasting of both Nectars along with any tasting you do at their tasting room.

Award-winning tastings

Kleine Zalze wines have made their mark at local and international competitions winning a slew of awards, five stars, and gold medals. Sip and swirl them in the cosy tasting room or outside on the terrace, with views of Stellenbosch Mountains.
