Laborie: Lunch + Summer Sunset Picnics Among the Vines

Dating back to 1691, Laborie Estate in the heart of Paarl sets a relaxed mood for a quintessential summer picnic. When you book, choose between a picnic table, a spot on the lawns beside the vines with long mountain views, or one of the new secluded picnic spots hidden away in the vineyards. Then all you have to do is collect your picnic from the Manor House and settle in for a leisurely feast.

If you’d prefer to enjoy your hamper later in the afternoon, Laborie’s relaxed sunset picnics are the perfect end to a summer’s day in the Winelands – with a chilled glass of the estate’s wine in hand, watching the golden glow of the sun as it disappears behind Paarl Mountain.

What’s in the basket?

The wooden picnic crate has been thoughtfully compiled by chef Melissa Bird and includes plenty of locally sourced treats.

• selection of charcuterie
• selection of local cheeses
• freshly baked baguette
• preserves and pickles
• crudités with hummus and tzatziki
• smoked snoek samosas
• mushroom arancini
• sticky chicken wings
• marinated citrus olives
• homemade fudge, Turkish delight, chocolate brownie, crispy treat

A vegetarian box replaces charcuterie with a larger selection of cheeses, and adds grilled vegetables and garden salads instead of the other meat options.

Just for kids

This is a lovely destination for families, with plenty of space for children to run around and a jungle gym beside the vineyard lawns. Plus, of course, a picnic designed for kids on the go:

• juice box

The recently opened Farm Grocer is stocked with a wide range of delicious goodies from local artisanal producers. Pop in to add more treats to your picnic boxes, when lunch stretches towards sunset and you still can’t tear yourself away.
