A seductively sumptuous setting for a scrumptious afternoon tea.
Above the Company’s Garden, behind famous white pillars, The Mount Nelson is a discreet oasis of serenity and time-honoured elegance. One of the most revered landmarks in Cape Town, the hotel is perhaps best known for its pale-pink exterior, magnificent gardens and, not least, its Afternoon Tea.
Tea is taken in the outdoor conservatory, the gardens or the Tea Lounge, an immediately inviting space that reflects the hotel’s signature hue – with Aubusson rugs and upholstery in subtle rose hues – and leads onto the hotel’s magnificent garden verandah. The upscale (not stiff) ambience is relaxed, and conducive to enjoying the superb food and beautiful surrounds while Henry Dike plays classics on a baby grand.
The tea
Under the guidance of resident tea sommelier Craig Cupido, guests are invited to sample over 40 of the finest teas. (We recommend the signature Mount Nelson blend with pink rose petals. Or opt for the earthy, yet delicate orange and spice rooibos from the Cederberg.) Served on silver tiered stands, the comestible accompaniment is a showcase of local and global classics, and includes:
- melktert with cinnamon and cardamom
- baked cheesecake with white chocolate and tangy berry tartlets
- baskets of warm, freshly baked scones
- koesisters sprinkled with coconut
- the hotel’s famous mushroom empanadas
- cauliflower and onion pakoras
- Farmer Angus beef frikkadels
- delicate finger sandwiches filled with smoked Franschhoek trout

And remember: no dunking! And, break your scone in two by hand!
