Paul René: Cap Classique + Sushi Saturdays in Robertson
A bubbly good reason to head to Robertson for the weekend.
By Inside Guide • 12 November 2025
At the heart of a wine valley with a river running through it, and limestone soils that are a dream for lovers of chardonnay and bubbly, Robertson is an enticing weekend destination, especially when you’re looking to escape the city buzz, slow down and soak up the scenery. Even more so now that Henk and Monica van Niekerk have introduced Sushi Saturdays at Paul René Cap Classique. Their family farm (just outside Robertson itself) is surrounded by vineyards above the river with stunning mountain views… an idyllically scenic setting for gathering friends and family over a relaxed glass of bubbly and deliciously fresh sushi.
Building a boutique bubbly

When he was a child experimenting with ingredients filched from his mother’s kitchen for cook-ups on boy scout field expeditions, Henk hardly envisaged that he was laying down the palate for a future in winemaking… but since his first experimental vintage in 2009, followed by the release of the first Paul René Brut late in 2011, he hasn’t looked back. With Monica as the creative force behind the modern look of their boutique bubbly brand, they’ve found a niche with a new generation of cap classique enthusiasts, chefs and sommeliers.
Three cap classiques

The Brut that started the dream remains 100% chardonnay and has garnered a significant number of awards over the years, as has its companion in the boutique range, the Brut Rosé (75% pinot noir, 25% chardonnay). A recent addition that is already celebrating its own wins is the Paul René Nectar (also a blend of pinot noir and chardonnay), which brings a sweet caramel finish to the table and pairs beautifully with chicken curries, cheese and dessert.
Sushi & Bubbly Saturdays

The courtyard tables outside the tasting room, and terrace spilling out onto wide lawns, come alive each Saturday through summer as a new gathering spot in the Robertson Valley. Deliciously fresh sushi paired with a glass or two of bubbles is the focus of the menu, and there are plenty more food options for children and non-sushi eaters. Relaxed but celebratory (by virtue of the elegant bubbles in your glass), it’s the perfect excuse to get together with friends and family, and kids are welcome too.

With three school-age children themselves, Henk and Monica have created an elegant but family-friendly space, with barrel swings, cooling water features, and plenty of space for kids to run and play.
A sparkling new destination to add to your Robertson Valley weekend adventures.
