If you’re looking for a fun new experience in the Cape Winelands, a segway adventure might just be it. Located just outside of Stellenbosch, Spier Wine Farm offers these family-friendly tours that not only allow you to soak up the beauty of the surrounding Helderberg Mountains, but also offer participants an opportunity to learn about farm life.
Whether you’re celebrating a birthday (children 10 years and above are welcome), having a family get-together, team building event or even a romantic date, a segway adventure is a wonderful way to enjoy the Winelands.
How it works
Before you begin, you’ll be taken through a 20-minute training session that will make even the most unfamiliar segwayers feel right at home. Then it’s time to hop aboard your off-road segway, and glide through vines and farm plains, while learning about Spier’s biodynamic farming methods and wine-making techniques.
Participants are required to arrive at least 10 minutes before the tour, and should have sunscreen, water, weather-appropriate clothes and flat shoes.
There are two tours to choose from, which vary in duration and scope.
Spier Wine Farm Tour
This one-hour tour combines a beautiful glide through the farm to the first block of vineyards, with some interesting facts about Spier’s farming techniques.

Segway through the farm and surrounding vineyards, learning about the grapes and farming techniques. Then enjoy a signature wine-tasting after the tour.

Spier Sunset Tour
Soak up dusk in the Winelands with a romantic sunset tour through the farm and vineyards.
Duration 2 hours (September – May)
Time Monday – Sunday, departure ranges from 16:30 to 17:30 depending on season, excludes winter (May – Aug).

Please note the following restrictions for all tours

- 10 years is the minimum age for the one-hour tour and 12 years for the two-hour tour.
- 120kg is the maximum weight.
- The tours are not suitable for pregnant women.
- The tours are not suitable for people with leg, knee, arm, wrist, back and/ or neck injuries.
- Alcohol consumption is prohibited before tours.

Good to know Off-road escooters are also available for the one-hour farm tour. They are ideal for families as smaller kids (6-9 years) who can’t ride Segway can join an adult on an escooter. Anyone with an injury or physical impairment, or who doesn’t fancy Segway but still wants to be included in the fun, can now also join on an escooter.
