Rock god, artist, X Factor judge, 42, on money, Miley Cyrus and Modern Family.
I’m proud to have lived hard. It makes getting older easier.
The best thing about living in Kalk Bay is that it’s mentally worlds apart from city life, and yet we’re only 30 minutes from the CBD. There are lots of stunning walks between Muizenberg and Simonstown. Depending on your fitness level and taste for adventure, there’s something for everyone.
When out-of-towners come to town I take them to Imhoff Farm in Kommetjie, Café Roux in Noordhoek, Harbour House, Cape to Cuba, The Brass Bell and The Annex in Kalk Bay.
The best restaurant meal I’ve eaten recently was at Nelson’s Eye. It’s been around since the Sixties and, after all these years, it still serves the best steaks in Cape Town. Try the café special.
I also love eating at Mario’s Italian Restaurant in Green Point. I usually order the offal, marrowbones or the guineafowl in red wine. And, for affordable and tasty peri-peri chicken, I love Nando’s.
Since the birth of our child we don’t go out all that much – and I don’t miss it a bit [laughs ironically].
On Twitter I follow music-orientated people, some breaking-news sites and some funny people.
The Oscar Pistorius trial doesn’t get airtime in our home. I try not to watch it – I think it’s too tragic. And I still don’t understand why the whole country, with our terrible crime statistics, has to be exposed to it constantly on national TV.
My favourite TV series are Vikings, Game of Thrones and Modern Family.
My favourite weekend getaway is staying at home. My work takes us away a lot of the time, so staying at home is a treat. I also love hot springs – wherever they are I eventually find them.
On my bucket list to still explore are the hiking trips in the Cape mountains.
My favourite drink for a special occasion is Meerlust Rubicon in winter, Buitenverwagting Buiten Blanc in summer and good Scottish whisky all year long.
The best book I’ve read recently is The Elephant to Hollywood by Michael Caine.
The best movie I’ve seen recently is Mr Peabody & Sherman.
I’m currently busy supporting my new acoustic album Lightning Prevails that features some great guest artists with countrywide gigs. I’m also in the process of brainstorming my next art exhibition, and planning my next album to be released within the next two or three years.
On Sunday I cry easy.
Miley Cyrus has got one beautiful song.
Money brings happiness.
Straight after this, I’m…rehearsing with a goema band.
One day, when I’m six-feet under, I’ll grow up.
TV talent shows, like Idols and X factor normally don’t register with me, but when I found out that we the judges would be mentoring them, the thought became more appealing. Now, having seen the talent, I’m glad I said yes to being a judge.
