Cape Town Voted The Best City In The World To Visit

Cape Town Best City

A double gold win for this place we call home.

The 2023 Telegraph Travel Awards announcement of the top country has made a big splash, knocking decade-long favourite New Zealand off the leaderboard. The awards, established in 1998, are voted for by the well-travelled readers of the UK newspaper – almost 30 000 of them.

Other countries in the top 10 list included the more predictable Maldives, Japan, Italy, India, as well as safari stars and fellow African nations Kenya (at No.7) and Botswana (at No.10).

South Africa was a runner-up in the poll in 2018 and 2019, but we had to wait out the pandemic… It’s clear the renewed desire to travel, coupled with an interest in seeing less-familiar corners of the globe, has found its perfect destination.

Calling South Africa “a place of true beauty”, The Telegraph mentioned the ease of flights from the UK, and no jet lag (bonus); once on the ground, there’s the diverse variety of places to explore to suit every kind of traveller:

  • the “ribbon of road-trip nirvana” that is the Garden Route
  • the “roaring wildlife zone” of Kruger National Park
  • the “thrilling landscapes” of the Drakensberg and Mpumalanga
  • the “finely crafted vintages” of the Winelands
  • and “the supermodel at the foot of Table Mountain”, Cape Town

Speaking of which…

Still the Best City in the World to Visit

Cape Town Best City Beaches

Where do you dream of going… Venice, Paris, Florence, New York, Rio, Tokyo, Istanbul…? They’re all lovely, but Cape Town’s where it’s at. The Mother City has topped the Telegraph Travel Awards rankings for eight years in a row (since 2013, excluding Covid 2020 and 2021).

The varied delights of Cape Town, “a remarkable city gleaming at a continent’s edge”, according to the survey, range from its stunning location at the foot of an iconic mountain and the golden curve of its beaches to the heart-stealing scenery of the Peninsula and the Winelands on the doorstep.

The Telegraph cites a few other reasons why people love it: the exchange rate, the Michelin-standard restaurants and five-star beds with a view for a fraction of the cost, plus those lovely long summer days, and the fact it’s bordered by no less than 26 wine districts.
