Perched at the top of the Helshoogte Pass, Delaire Graff is the apex of indulgence. The wine estate is known for its gardens and magnificent art collection, and this is carried through to the spa – where you’ll find tranquil canals, koi ponds, wooden walkways and spaces adorned with works by leading SA artists. Treatment rooms are discreetly positioned to ensure privacy as well as sweeping vistas from an expansive terrace, and numbers are limited to just six guests a day, who book a half-day or couples’ experience for personalised, immersive rituals.

What makes it special In addition to top skincare brands (Augustinus Bader and Irene Forte), the spa has its own homegrown Jardin de Delaire botanical range, which you can pick and blend yourself during the Signature Couples Experience.
We love This is luxury from every angle – from the spacious treatment suites to the pure visual beauty and VIP experience.

Vergenoegd Löw Luxury Spa

Spas Cape Town Vergenoegd Low Luxury Spa

Stellenbosch | Historic hideaway
Vergenoegd Löw is celebrated for its history (the farm dates from 1696) and heritage buildings – two of which have been beautifully restored and converted into wonderful restaurants. Franschhoek | Modern zen
Babylonstoren needs no introduction, with its awe-inspiring gardens. Add a luxe spa inspired by those magnificent gardens and, trust us, you’ll want to move in. You’ll find it hidden towards the back of the gardens, a bamboo pavilion within a zen-like forest of bamboo. Being on a working farm, where natural beauty is all around, is what inspires this spa’s approach, combining the rejuvenating qualities of water, heat and herbs picked on site. There is also a small menu of beauty treatments using Esse and QMS.
Lay of the land 7 treatment rooms; tropical rain showers; a sauna and steam room; a rasul chamber and 2 hammams. The stunning indoor-outdoor pool area has 2 vitality pools (jacuzzis) built into the heated main pool, and even a fireplace.

Spier Spa

Spas Cape Town Spier Spa

Stellenbosch | Plant-forward purity
This historic wine farm, with its Cape Dutch buildings, regenerative farming philosophy and a river running through it, is the perfect spot to indulge in some regeneration of one’s own. The recently reimagined Spier Hotel now has beautiful re-wilded fynbos gardens, and in the midst of these sits the new spa with its unique Cape Herbal Bath House. It has its own bespoke range of Vine Therapy products, crafted from indigenous Cape botanicals – Cape healing herbs, red grapes and vine leaves.
Lay of the land 10 treatment rooms (including 2 double/triple rooms); infrared sauna; 2 steam rooms; cold therapy; a mindful movement studio; mani-pedi station; plus the showpiece bath house, with heated marble exfoliating slabs and claw-foot baths. Outside is a private pool courtyard with loungers.
What makes it special The focus on indigenous botanicals, a resident phytotherapist to mix up the magic potions, and an apothecary garden for fresh pickings – even the welcoming tea and juice come from the garden. The signature three-hour Bath House experience includes a warm scrub, herbal bathing and a massage, plus a farm-fresh lunch with organic wine. Sauna and steam sessions, as well as lymphatic drainage massages, can be booked without other treatments.
We love That bathhouse is gorgeous – think shelves lined with jars of botanicals, hanging bunches of herbs, ceiling fans, cane furniture, deep square wash basins and a colour scheme that echoes the Cape plant kingdom. It’s almost like being out in the fynbos wilderness.
Insider tip While you’re here, book an organic wine-tasting; or enjoy a picnic or meal at the hotel’s Garden Room restaurant or Vadas Smokehouse. For some fresh air, take a self-guided walk around the art-filled gardens or do a Segway tour of the vineyards.

While the spas offer familiar treatments, such as Swedish massages, aromatherapy, facials, body scrubs and wraps, these often come with a unique African or Cape touch – in the healing botanicals used, or the traditional African techniques. (However, international brands are also well represented, particularly on the skincare side of things.)

The African touch often extends to the decor and design of the spaces – far from being clinical, they’re warm and inviting, incorporating “colour therapy” and hints of Afro-Asian fusion; some play up the history of the location, while others boast striking, contemporary architecture. Many spas have exceptional views.

Best Spas Cape Town

Cape Town’s spas are particularly strong when it comes to hydrotherapy experiences – from saunas, steam rooms and jacuzzis to “experience” showers, herbal baths, hammam rituals and, often, a fabulous pool area in which to relax and soak up the sunshine and scenery.

The setting of the spas is the final strong suit – located in some of the best hotels in the city or on top wine estates, they offer excellent dining and drinking or other activities to add to the indulgence.

The best time to visit?

  • Summer (November to March) is ideal for outdoor treatments and pool time. It can be windy on the beaches, while spa pools are more sheltered.
  • Winter (June to August) is the rainy season in the Cape, so what could be better than a cosy spa experience, with warming therapies and fireside relaxing?

How far ahead should I book? Summer is peak season in the Cape, so book as far ahead as possible. Weekends also tend to be busier than weekdays, so booking a month in advance is advised. The smaller the spa, the less treatment rooms it has, the more in demand it will be. On the day of your booking, arrive early so that you can complete the necessary forms and have a proper consultation.
Any general rules I should know about? Nudity in the saunas, steam rooms etc is not common practice. Spa patrons are given robes, slippers and disposable underwear; you will need to bring your own swimwear. Cellphones should be stored away. Children are generally not admitted, although some spas have special menus for tweens and teens.
Can I combine the spa with other activities? Yes, many spas offer special packages that combine treatments with a meal or high tea, for example; or with an overnight stay. If the spa is on a wine estate, you can enjoy walks and other outdoor activities, and wine-tasting of course. Some spas also offer yoga, meditation or pilates sessions.
