If you don’t already love chardonnay when you walk through the doors of Atlas Swift’s Franschhoek tasting room, there’s a high probability that you will gain a new respect and admiration for the varietal before you leave. Martin and Welma Smith have a singular vision at their family wine cellars: to celebrate the terroir of different regions of the Cape with chardonnay (and also cabernet sauvignon) as the vehicle. They focus on dedicated vineyard blocks in the Cederberg, the Cape South Coast, Wellington, Robertson and Franschhoek, and craft each vintage with elegance and simplicity, allowing the individual characteristics of each distinctive terroir to shine through.

Why chardonnay?

Atlas Swift started off as a side gig to the couple’s day jobs in wine (Martin is co-owner of nearby Paserene and consultant winemaker; Welma studied oenology, viticulture and also qualified as a sommelier). “We have always dreamed of having our destiny in our own hands, and to raise our two children in an environment filled with love for what we do,” says Welma.

“We made a bold statement by focusing on Chardonnay,” she continues. “Chardonnay stands out as a grape because she is a mirror, capturing and reflecting the land in the wine. We want people to feel that deep connection to each of the vineyards we work with, and show them a completely different perspective on chardonnay in South Africa.”

Wine-tasting

In the glassed-in verandah tasting room (or outside on the terrace) choose between two different tasting flights and discover the stories behind them. The five strong Atlas Swift terroir-specific chardonnay tasting is a must-do. But red wine lovers will also be tempted to explore the finely crafted informal Shelter range (a chardonnay blend, malbec, cabernet sauvignon and a red blend).

Luscious charcuterie and cheese platters for two people to share give you plenty to feast on while you sip, or you can get snacks of olives, biltong, sourdough, honeycomb and cheesecake. A Nigiro tea tasting and a kids paint your cookie offering make it an experience for all the family to join in.
