A seamless coming-together of luxury and heritage.
The third-oldest farm in Stellenbosch (founded in 1692, just a decade after the town itself), and the first to commercially bottle and sell pinotage, Lanzerac is a majestic slice of Cape history and Jonkershoek scenery, and a quintessential Winelands landmark. Surrounded by beautiful manicured gardens, the heritage estate has many delights to explore.
Lanzerac Hotel
The old farm buildings, which were built over 332 years ago, have been carefully converted into a five-star hotel, arguably one of the most beautiful in the Winelands. Fresh from a recent update, the manorhouse rooms blend the grandeur of their rich history with modern comfort and luxury, each individually decorated with antiques, plush textiles and art. The estate also boasts two swimming pools and a library. A stay includes breakfast (with bubbly) in the Manor Kitchen, a wine-tasting and cellar tour, access to the spa’s pool/hydrotherapy facilities, and a free shuttle service into town. The concierge can also book nature outings in the Jonkershoek Valley; plus a variety of history and art tours in Stellenbosch, adventure activities and helicopter flights to make the most of your stay.

Wine Tasting & Deli
Lanzerac Estate (also celebrating 65 years of its pioneering pinotage this year) produces three ranges, with wines including heritage limited releases, the cellarmaster’s unusual blends, a pinotage rosé and cap classique. Try the wines in the elegant lounge or out on the oak-shaded verandah overlooking the vines – two tastings are offered, and a wine-and-chocolate-truffle pairing, along with cellar-door sales. This space has recently evolved into a multi-purpose hub, where you can enjoy gourmet sandwiches, all-day breakfast, homemade deli treats and bakes, or unwind with a glass of wine and a platter in the lounge – in front of a fireplace in winter. It also has workstations with wireless mobile charging.

The Manor Kitchen
The flagship restaurant’s name reflects its ethos – special yet welcoming. Large leaded windows make it light and airy by day; by night, it’s super romantic dining beneath the glittering chandelier and star-shaped ceiling detail. Chef Stephen Fraser’s menu leans into fine dining, inspired by the seasons and local ingredients – even more so on Friday and Saturday nights, when you can enjoy his seven-course Experience Menu. Also on weekends, an à la carte (long, lazy, wine-soaked) Sunday lunch is served, and in the tradition of all fine hotels, there’s a classic Afternoon Tea service on Saturday. Vegan and vegetarian dinner options are available.
Good to know The seven-course Experience Menu costs R1 200 per person; the Afternoon Tea is R420 per person (or R520 with bottomless bubbly).
Opening times Dinner: daily, 6pm – 10pm
Sunday Lunch: 12pm – 3pm

The Taphuis
This is Lanzerac’s more rustic, country-style option for a meal, with stone walls, brick floor, exposed rafters, yellowwood furnishings and an age-old wooden bar counter with many a story to tell. The Taphuis serves gourmet pub grub, a great selection of steaks and sharing plates, best enjoyed in the courtyard in summer with garden views. There is also a children’s menu (including fantastic milkshakes), making it a great choice for a family visit.
Good to know The Craven Lounge, a cocktail and spirits bar open from 5pm, offers a Gentleman’s Tea (on Saturday), plus a whisky-and-food pairing tasting experience.
Opening times Taphuis: Daily, 12pm – 10pm
