In a peaceful, hidden valley in the Rooiberg mountains near Calitzdorp on Route 62, Danielskraal offers the quintessential Karoo escape, with an 1836 thatched farmhouse with metre-thick walls and a deep verandah, surrounded by gardens and a bucolic view of sheep and goats in a never-ending landscape of green pastures. Beyond lies over 2 000 hectares of the untamed Klein Karoo and Swartberg Mountains.
With space to sleep eight (three couples and two children or two couples and four children), this self-catering getaway is exclusively yours to enjoy – and to settle back into a gentler, simpler way of living. The water in the taps comes from a mountain spring; the gorgeously furnished house is filled with collectables and books, comfy seating and cosy fireplaces, and has four luxurious bedrooms. (There’s wifi, DStv and Netflix, but you won’t have time for these!)
Special experiences
From cooking up a feast in the kitchen, dining on the verandah with wonderful views and toasting marshmallows under the stars at the firepit, to long rambles on the farm, picnics, lounging around the pool, playing boules or croquet, the time will pass in a splendid reverie.
The youngsters can run wild, exploring the labyrinthine olive grove, swimming in the dam and pool, riding their bikes, hunting for “dinosaurs” (fossils), climbing trees or the wind pump, or camping out in the garden.
The Accidental Baker
Your three days on Danielskraal can be as relaxed and lazy as you please, but included in the prize is an indulgent Saturday morning breakfast at The Accidental Baker, an artisanal sourdough bakery and café in Calitzdorp, as well as a private tasting of whisky, port or wine at the award-winning Boplaas family vineyards (established in 1880) with co-owner Daniel. A guided hiking expedition to enjoy the distinct fynbos and succulents, and to see the recently discovered San rock paintings, is also included.

There’s also the option of day trips, to explore Calitzdorp’s wine route, Oudtshoorn’s Cango Caves and ostrich farms, or foodie mecca Prince Albert via the spectacular Swartberg Pass.

The total prize is valued at R37 700, and includes a three-nights stay for eight people (self-catering) worth R28 500, one breakfast worth R1 700, a private wine/whisky tasting worth R5 000 (plus a bottle of whisky to take home) and a guided hike worth R2 500.
