Overnight delight

The 18 Terrace Suites – Old Cape-style thatched buildings with shutters – sit on manicured lawns, surrounded by lush gardens and vineyards. You could not ask for a better sense of place. The suite’s terrace, draped in trailing vines, offers fantastic views.

Inside, they are an elegant evocation of the hotel’s rich history combined with a modern Winelands aesthetic: gorgeous fynbos-inspired wallpaper, art and vintage finds, bespoke cabinetry and the finest linen. Comprising a bedroom, bathroom and living area, the suites were reimagined as charming “cottages” – with space for eating, relaxing and working.

Dining experience

With some 30 years in the industry, chef Christian Campbell was a pioneer of seasonal menus and hyper-local sourcing, quietly creating a food revolution all over the Winelands. Having worked at the likes of Delaire Graff and Boschendal, he has brought his fresh, modern approach to dining at the Grande Roche.

His dinner menus are a culinary adventure, inspired by global cuisine but using seasonal, home-grown produce. They change often, but might include Cantonese potstickers, Indian-spiced fish, pork belly with nori jam or coffee-spiced game loin. The winelist, of course, is proudly local, including the Grande Dame, a red wine crafted from the micro-vineyards in front of the manor house.

In addition, there’s the hotel-style breakfast menu, a more casual all-day menu (taking care of brunches, light lunches and coffee meetings), plus a sumptuous high tea offering and cocktails. Not only for hotel guests, the restaurant at Grand Roche welcomes day visitors, pop-ins and special celebrations – making it a convivial hub in Paarl.
