Winner announced! Congrats to Peter Kyle Long How who won this fabulous prize.
Visitors to the Cape may be familiar with the Last Word’s boutique collection of family-owned small hotels in Constantia, Kommetjie and Franschhoek. The Last Word also offers a safari break for guests who would like to experience the iconic African landscape.
Last Word Madikwe is in South Africa’s fifth-largest game reserve, a stone’s throw from the Botswana border and Kalahari Desert. A swathe of woodlands and open savannah, it is a malaria-free, Big Five reserve that’s also world-famous for its cheetah and wild dog populations.
Front-row seat
What makes Last Word Madikwe special is its location – right beside a prolific waterhole visited by elephants, buffalo, rhinos, zebras, giraffes, antelope, and predators, of course. Guests can see all the action from the comfort of the lodge, from the swimming pool or even pull up a chair on the lawns for a closer look.
Last Word Madikwe also has one of the best underground photographic hides in the country, right on the water’s edge, and comfortably furnished and kitted out for close wildlife encounters of the extraordinary kind.
In addition, guests enjoy daily dawn and sundowner game drives to explore more of the reserve and see the greatest variety of animals and birdlife. There is also a private nature trail on the property should guests want to stretch their legs.
Safari in style
Not your usual safari lodge, Last Word Madikwe feels like a gorgeous home, decorated in the elegant style of a boutique hotel, and filled with collectables and wildlife art. There are just five guest suites, dressed in chic-safari style, with a bathtub and shower, private patio, beverage tray and luxury amenities.
Daytime meals are enjoyed on the verandah, and by night in the boma under the stars or at a candlelit dining table indoors or out. There’s a bar and lounge area (with a cosy fireplace for winter evenings), a green and tranquil garden to relax in, and an inviting rock swimming pool.
If you’re hearing the call of the wild, enter our competition below and stand a chance to experience this extraordinary place.

I have travelled a lot overseas and there is nothing better than an African sunset, whilst watching animals at a drinking hole. African nature is essential for me and my family. We could not do without the seductive wellbeing that Africa and especially South Africa brings to our state of mind and bodies. It is not only a healing medicine for all problems but is life sustaining to everyone that gets to experience it.
Leone Tiemensma
The bush is the best place to experience nature and tranquility; “Me time”.

I would love to give this as a wedding present to my daughter and son-in-law. They got married in the beginning of September and her work gave her 1 day off( she is a teacher. ) They are now relocating to CT from Joburg and the money that they received as wedding gifts will be spent on relocating so no extra for a honeymoon.
