Your adventure begins when you’re ferried across the Calitzdorp Dam to your own private encampment on the water’s edge – it’s the only way to access the blissful sanctuary of Tula Retreat, and there’s nothing but rolling hills behind it, which means you will have utter privacy. The Jala glamping set-up (and this truly is “glamorous camping”) consists of an open-plan sleeping and living area, and a separate fully equipped outdoor kitchen about 100 metres away – all of it drenched in views.
Designed for sustainability, mindfulness and connection with the natural landscape, Tula is off-grid, with LED and lantern lighting, solar power and “fire” power – think braais, cosy fireplaces indoors and out, and a hot tub. It has everything you need, from luxury bed linen, towels and bathroom amenities to books, board games and yoga mats; all you need to do is bring your drinks and food (there’s the option to pre-order self-catering meal kits and collect them in Calitzdorp on your way to Tula)… and a favourite companion.
Enjoy the glorious views of succulent-clad mountains reflected in the dam from the wood-burning hot tub. Lounge in the hammock. Salute the sun or meditate from the deck (yoga mats and meditation pillows are provided). Braai on a fire. Swim in the dam or explore the waters in a two-seater canoe or on a SUP board (supplied for guests), or book a boat cruise or guided kayak tour. There’s also fishing from the dock, birdwatching and hiking in the surrounding valley. Bring your own bike and you can also ride the picturesque Groenfontein Valley Circle Route.

The winner’s name will be drawn on Tuesday, 2 September 2025, and the prize is redeemable from 2 September until 31 October 2025 (subject to availability). The total prize is valued at R11 800, and includes accommodation for two people in the Jala Luxury Tent.
This competition and its prizes are being offered by Tula Retreat, which is solely responsible for ensuring that the winner receives his/her prize. The Inside Guide shall not be liable to entrants of this competition for any prizes, loss or damage whatsoever and howsoever arising from the running, or otherwise, of this competition. The winners will be notified by email and should reply within 24 hours. If you do not respond within 24 hours, you will forfeit your prize and another winner will be drawn. The prize is redeemable from 2 September until 31 October 2025. Once we have received your email, we will put you in touch with the organisers to arrange your prize.
