Some seriously good grub to treat your mom.
Ever since Essex-born chef-proprietor Matt Manning opened its doors in 2018, Grub & Vine Bistro has become a much-loved Bree Street institution; one that discerning foodies return to again and again. “Vibey, honest, unpretentious” food is how Matt describes it, all done with the culinary know-how of him and his accomplished team, with some blazingly good wine pairings too.
And for Mother’s Day this year, there are two ways for you to spoil your mom with some seriously good grub.
Pre-Mother’s Day lunch on Bree Street
In the lead-up to Mother’s Day (but not on the day itself because the restaurant is closed on Sundays), Matt is inviting you to spoil your mom with a special two-course lunch (plus canapés), along with a complimentary glass of bubbly to toast the occasion. Choose from the tantalising menu du jour, perhaps the seared umami tuna with avocado mousse and crispy kataifi followed by confit pork belly with pomme Anna, pork crackling and mustard sauce. Or finish on a sweet note with a white chocolate panna cotta with raspberry, and vanilla and caramel ice cream. The Mother’s Day offering is also available downstairs in the Blue Room for dinner and across the landing at Culture Wine Bar for lunch and dinner.
Good to know There is an alternative vegetarian menu.
Date 5 – 10 May 2025
Time 12pm – 3pm; 6pm – 9.30pm
Cost R495 (canapés, two courses + complimentary glass of bubbly)

Sunday lunch and kids activities at Grub & Vine Norval
On Mother’s Day itself head to the leafy and art-filled setting of Grub & Vine Norval where the Sunday sharing menu gets a Mother’s Day boost that the kids (and moms) will love. A collaboration with Play by Nature has a raft of activities for the littlies: painting canvases and candles, crafting flower crowns and posies for mom, and making nature perfumes. The two-hour sequence of fun keeps them busy while adults settle into leisurely enjoyment of the sharing menu (children can order separately from the à la carte kids menu).
Served family-style as a communal feast are canapés and focaccia, followed by starters of chargrilled asparagus with caprese tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella; and seared yellowtail nicoise. Then main courses of linefish with a seafood curry pot; confit pork belly; or côte de boeuf; with a plethora of sides. And to finish, a lemon curd tart with berries and walnut ice cream; or a selection of South African cheeses.
The beautiful views over sculpture garden and mountains add another layer of special to the occasion.
Good to know Adult and kids tickets for the activities should be booked first with Play by Nature and automatically secure your booking for a restaurant table. If you don’t have kids in the age range just book a table directly at the restaurant.
