Belly Of The Beast Lunch Special: R350 For An Out-Of-The-Ordinary Feast
The special R350 for an out-of-the-ordinary lunch.
About the restaurant Since opening in August 2018, this wildly popular Harrington Street haunt hasn’t had an empty seat (granted, there are only 20 in the house). As co-owner Neil Swart explains: “Cooking dishes on a small scale enhances the depth of flavour of each element.” Dining at Belly of the Beast is much more than a meal, it’s a gastronomic experience of the highest standard (Neil only cooks with local seasonal ingredients and sustainably sourced meat).
The industrial-modern space is cool yet cosy, elevated by a curated alternative playlist. An entirely exposed kitchen lines one side of the restaurant and a street-facing window lines the other. The restaurant serves a tasting menu for dinner and a slightly scaled down version for lunch.

The special R550 for a kaiseki menu (multi-course fine-dining).
R395 for an optional additional drinks pairing.
About Tjing Tjing on Longmarket Street is a four-in-one Japanese emporium, offering a variety of immersive dining experiences. The first floor is home to the beautifully understated Momiji restaurant, whose multi-course kaiseki menu is going for a discounted rate until 31 October 2020.
So what exactly is kaiseki? The Japanese equivalent of haute cuisine (French for high cooking), it refers to the style of meticulous preparation and presentation of dishes, usually reserved for high-level establishments.
Tjing Tjing Momiji’s seasonal menu is a traditional kaiseki menu with a delightful South African twist. The menu will change regularly, but examples of what you can expect include sashimi of the day, spring-chicken broth, garden salad, beef wagyu, and a camembert cheese tart with gooseberry sorbet for dessert.
Good to know The eatery harvests and grows its own organic produce from two gardens grown in partnership with Urban Harvest – one of which is at Chapel Street Primary in Woodstock, and is shared with the school. In addition to the chefs having access to homegrown produce, the eatery empowers the community through the maintenance of the garden and teaching the local school children about growing nutritious ingredients.
