Arum Winter Special: R595 for 4 Courses
The farm-to-fire philosophy at Arum stays close to the seasons and takes a deep dive into Boschendal’s superb farm and garden produce (championing biodynamic and regenerative farming). Winter is when this story is most vivid. Chef-patron Peter Tempelhoff and executive chef (and partner) Travis Finch have dreamed up a sizzling four-course menu. Tuck into kapokbos and olive focaccia and wood-fired ciabatta with farm butter, roast aubergine caviar and romesco. For starters choose between Cape octopus with crispy guanciale, smoked corn, brown butter, habañero and yellow tomato; or seared springbok tataki with marinated egg, daikon and tempura mushrooms. For mains, go for pan-roasted kingklip with prawn farce, date chutney and Malay velouté; or dry-aged beef fillet with mushrooms (grown in the woodlands just beyond the vegetable garden), potato cake and beef juices. Finish with a delicious Madagascan chocolate cremeaux with candied orange, honey tuile and olive oil; or a pain perdu with caramelised honey, coconut mousse, farm blueberries and vanilla cream.

Beyond Winter Special: R690 for 4 Courses
With views over the vines on Buitenverwachting wine farm, Beyond is a sophisticated (yet unpretentious) dining destination where everything – from the polished service, sublime views and stellar food and wine – is firmly top-tier. Chef Peter Tempelhoff (chef-patron of Cape Town’s acclaimed FYN Group), executive chef Sebastian Stehr and head chef Zante Neethling are champions of local and indigenous ingredients (foraged by the chefs or grown in their kitchen garden), and their menus take guests on a journey of the Western Cape’s flavour profiles.
The four-course winter special menu celebrates comfort and craft in equal measure. It begins with a surprise appetiser, before segueing into a vibrant starter such as smoked raw yellowfin tuna with kelp aioli, citrus chilli kosho and locally sourced seaweed. A choice of mains follows: perhaps wood-fired Kalahari beef with brisket ragout, carrot gnocchi, cabbage with kapokbos and bone marrow jus; or pan-roasted Cape fish with fermented cabbage, toasted congee and makrut lime laksa, green curry “risotto” and garden succulents with garlic buchu. Foxcroft Lunch Special: R995 for 5 Courses
Foxcroft now occupies one of the most sought-after heritage buildings in Cape Town, having moved to Constantia Nek in January this year. This is your chance to experience the new surroundings and the kitchen’s more refined approach. Part of the La Colombe group of restaurants, with chef-proprietor Glen Foxcroft Williams at the helm, Foxcroft was the more laidback sibling in the family, but the menu’s been tweaked with a more fine-dining ethos. This winter, it includes herbed saltbread, a trio of starters (fish ssam, noodle soup and garden tartlet), tuna ceviche, lamb, Namibian crab, lobster and a dessert of chestnut, mascarpone and burnt vanilla. Boundary-pushing dishes that taste as good as they look.

Little Fox Small-Plate Special: R800pp for 8-plate menu for 2
Little Fox is the more relaxed expression of chef-proprietor Glen Williams’ Foxcroft, and opened next door when his restaurant moved to the heritage Constantia Nek building earlier this year. The atmospheric space, with original sandstone walls and thatched roof, opens onto a leafy courtyard looking up at the mountain peaks; inside, the old stone fireplace keeps things toasty in winter. Glen and head chef Keanen Jaftha (ex La Colombe) have created a menu of beautifully crafted small plates, which means you can come for one dish or five, dine solo or with a crowd, and sip on wines from the Constantia Valley. The atmosphere is casual and unintimidating and the food packed with flavour. The Chef’s Favourites menu runs from zabb-zabb chicken wings and nduja-stuffed olives, through coal-fired peri-peri prawns, tuna with South American flavours and wagyu flat-iron steak, to the divine desserts: an ice-cream sandwich and bergamot posset with poached rhubarb.

SeaBreeze Fish & Shell Friday Special: Fizz & Chips for R150
Opened by Scottish restaurateurs and wine merchants, Alex and Ruth Grahame, a decade ago, SeaBreeze has always celebrated the freshest of the local (SASSI approved) catch with a menu guided by sustainability and seasonality. The heritage building at the top of Bree is relaxed but elegant, with a wide pavement terrace to watch the world go by. The menu features small plates (tacos, ceviche, samoosas, etc) and generous mains (think curries, pastas, whole roasted fish and more). You can’t beat a comfort classic, though, so end the week on a high note with this winter’s Friday special: fresh, line-caught hake in crispy batter, served with hand-cut chips, tangy tartare sauce, a wedge of lemon and a glass of Pierre Jourdan bubbly.
